Hard Back. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. McIver, Mike - Dust Jacket (illustrator). First American Edition Stated. 167 Pages Indexed. Gray boards with blue cloth quarter spine with gold spine lettering. It is a feat of considerable skill in seamanship and navigation to cross the greatest ocean in the world, the Pacific, but to do so with apparent nonchalance at over 70 years of age in a 49-foot yacht is truly remarkable. But then Eric Hiscock and his wife, Susan, are a truly remarkable couple. This is the story of their last voyage in the steel ketch Wanderer IV from their home in New Zealand to the west coast of Canada. It contains the poignant observatiosn of peole, places, and seamanship that have made Hiscock's previous books so popoular. On their return, the Hisocks decided to replace Wanderer IV with a smaler wooden, sloop-rigged yacht. The maiden voyage of Wanderer V is not a tale of idyllic sailing. Teething troubles developed in a prolonged period of heavy weather before they were able to reach Fiji. Having made repairs and modifications, they continued to Vanvatu and New Caledonia and on to the coast of New South Walkes. It was only when wanderer V reached Pittwater, near Sydney, that llthe final modificaitons could be made to cure the handling problems that dogged the voyage.

Some minor indentations along lower edge of front panel, a little rounded on corners. Internally some slight browning to pages else neat, clean and tight. In its original dust wrapper, shelf worn, lightly bumped at edges, with matching indentations. Eric Hiscock was fourteen - a schoolboy in Oxford - at the outbreak of the Great War. A year later he was a fully fledged soldier in the Royal Fusiliers, marching with men old enough to be his father. He received a baptism of fire in the Ypres Salient and experienced the horrors of the mud and blood at Passchendaele. A moving and disturbing first hand recollection of the front lines of the First World War.

Eric and Susan Hiscock set out from New Zealand in their jib-headed ketch, Wanderer IV, and sailed to England by way of Durban in South Africa; they then turned southwards to the Canary Islands and across the Atlantic; after pausing in the West Indi8es, they passed through the Panama Canal and made their way back to New Zealand via the Marquesas, Tahiti, and Fiji. Eric Hiscock presents a graphic picture of life at sea as well as telling of his encounters with old friends and the amking of new ones. He describes the places he and Susan visited with such immediacy that the reader might almost be with them aboard Wanderer, and he records with considerable feeling his views on officialdom the world over. Without interrupting the narrative he includes a wealth of information on a wide range of topics, technical and non-technical, on which fellow yachtsmen have consulted him over the years. This book has forty-three colour photographs taken by the author and his wife, and seven charts. Illustrated. 237 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions, Reference books ,and all types of Academic Literature.).
