Ernst Ising (1900-1998). "Beitrag zur Theorie des Ferromagnetismus" in "Zeitschrift für Physik" volume 31, 1925, pp 253-258, being an extract from a bound volume; this is the single article and not the entire issue. There are several pressure marks in the bottom half of the text, making this a somewhat problematic copy of this paper. The first leaf is also loose, pulled away. GOOD copy only. This is a foundational paper in the history of physics that has much wider applications, and has been cited 6300+ times. Ernst Ising's work is important for the Ising Model?a simple model he studied became one of the most powerful mathematical tools for understanding complex systems across the sciences. The Ising Model seems to be applicable everywhere, far beyond its physics birthplace, and in spite of Ising thinking for decades that his work was not significant. The model appears in magnetism, phase transitions, neural networks, genetics, social dynamics, optimization theory, machine learning, and AI. "In 1925, Ising studied a simplified mathematical model of magnetism that had originally been suggested by his advisor Wilhelm Lenz." "It was only in 1949 that Ising (Ph.D. 1924 at age 24) knew the importance his model attained in scientific literature, 25 years after his Ph.D. thesis. Today, each year, about 800 papers are published that use the model to address problems in such diverse fields as neural networks, protein folding, biological membranes and social behavior. Analysis of Google Scholar results shows exponential increase in the occurrence of "Ising model" in paper titles, with a doubling period of approximately ten years, reaching 1800 occurrences in 2025."--Wikipedia.
