Woodengraving, 1946, 11,8 x 10,1 cm., monogrammed in the block, on wove paper. = Bool 345; Iaquinta p.29. Verso with stamp "houtgravure M.C. Escher". Price, M.C. Escher - Amazing Images p.128: "The Well (We shall come out of it!) is considered the most powerful and complex of Escher's small-format prints. Th egrid-lined walls and dramatic zenith perspective are remiscent of the woodcut "Other World", which Escher was working on at approximately the same time as this print. We see hands climbing through a twisting octagonal well toward freedom - towards sunlight, birds, a tree in full bloom - and the security of a house. Hope and expectations, as well as the feeling of emerging from a life in a dark pit, were appropriate and monumental themes for the new year as 1946 drew to a close. Perhaps nowhere else in Escher's art did the artist create so much emotional power through the controlled gouging of his woodcutter's chisel. The entirely unsigned edition was commissioned by the Nederlandsche Exlibris-Kring (an artists' and printers' collector's society in The Netherlands) to honor the Dutch underground after teh Second World War." Upper right blank corner with unsharp fold/ crease.
