Original brown buckram, spine lettered and decorated in silver. Top edge brown. Illustrated brown endpapers. Gentle pushing to spine ends. Esme Nicoll's book label to front pastedown. A neat second impression copy of the "successor" to VSW's Hawthornden prize-winning, The Land, which itself won the Heineman Prize, from the collection of Esmé Nicoll and featuring her "Egland [House], Honiton" book label. A friend and correspondent of Agatha Christie, Esmé Nicoll (born Edith Sophie Mary Eliot, d. 1973) was the honorary curator and co-founder of Allhallows museum. Christie was a frequent visitor to Nicoll's home, Egland, a Georgian country house built as 'a gentleman's villa' in 1804 by John and William Lee of Honiton for Thomasine Anne El(l)iott, Nicoll's great aunt. The house was remodelled (perhaps by Nicoll?) in 1931, in the Roman Doric style, by architect Walter Sarel and builders Dart and Francis of Crediton.
