Unbound. Condition: Near Fine. Vintage snapshot. Measuring approximately 4½" x 2¾". Light paperclip impression in the left margin not breaking the emulsion, tiniest marginal edge tear, near fine. A nice image of Chas. Korte's Ice Wagon, with the slogan "A Block of Ice Never Gets out of Order" painted along the edges of the roof. A man, possibly Korte, stands in the rear of the wagon, although he moved during the exposure and only his legs and feet are sharp. The signs on the store behind the wagon advertise Coca Cola, Old Gold Cigarettes ("Not a Cough in a Carload"), and Hoffman Beverages. Although not marked in any way, this image came to us among a small collection of photographs of the same size, finish, an small stamp on verso ("D" and a number) which were stamped "Photo by J. Carleton Esty, Clifton, N. J."; we presume this was made by him as well. We haven't been able to find much about Esty; nearly all of the information we found relates to his time as an assessor and/or councilman in Lavallette, New Jersey. A pleasing image, nonetheless. (N.B. A Stanford program that researches tobacco advertising states that the Old Gold slogan mentioned above was used from the brand's creation in 1926 throughbased on their collection of over 100 piecesthrough about 1934, hence our tentative date attribution.).
