Condition: Bon. 1 vol. in-8 reliure de l'époque demi-chagrin noir, Librairie Victor Masson, Paris, 1860, 2 ff., 531 pp. Edition originale de cet ouvrage très intéressant dans lequel l'auteur, le médecin Albert des Etangs, propose un exposé chronologique mais également une tentative de classification de ces suicides politiques, ainsi que l'indique le titre des chapitres : "souffrances morales, affectiosn brisées, dévouement" (chap. 3), "Enthousiasme, exaltation, fanatisme" (chap. 4), "Déception, découragement, indiférrence" (chap. 6). Dans un article de 1857, l'auteur avait défini le suicide non seulement comme un "fait pathologique, purement individuel" mais d'abord "pour nous, avant toute chose, un fait social où l'individu n'intervient pour ainsi dire que pour donner une forme plus arrêtée, plus précise à des souffrances générales, souffrances morales et matérielles qui accusent hautement les vices de nos institutions et l'impuissance de nos lois". Ce traité a été rédigé à la suite de la question posée par l'Académie de médecine en 1847 à propos du suicide, la seconde dans ce domaine. Son auteur, le docteur des Étangs (1805-?) ne s'est pas contenté d'un recensement de suicides mais s'est intéressé à ceux dont la cause est politique, à partir de la Révolution française de 1789. Divisant son ouvrage par périodes politiques, il étudie les cas de mort volontaire, de personnages célèbres comme d'anonymes. Pour étayer son propos, il reproduit nombres de documents (notamment des lettres) ayant trait à ces récits. Très rare avec envoi. Ex-libris manuscrit de Michel Collée au faux-titre, étiquette ex-libris de N[icole] H[ebecourt]. Rogné court avec atteinte à l'envoi, frottements, quelques rousseurs.
