Hardcover. Condition: Fair. No Jacket. 1st Edition. The Rare First Edition (1773) of Etheridge's pocket-sized, ready-reckoner giving prices (Pounds, shillings and Pence) for a huge variety of gold and silver quantities. Plus a table of gold prices for the then present price of 3l.17s.10d.2q. per ounce. Described on the title pag…e as: "A Work very necessary at this Time for all Persons who are concerned in Money Transactions." Consists: 1. Tables for buying and selling of gold (107 paginated pages), 2. "To The Reader" (pp.111-112), 3. Table for reducing gold and silver bullion to standard weight (6 pp.), including how to use the Table, worked examples and Troy Weight scale. 4. Table 2: For Standarding of Gold (4 pp.) 5. Folding plate/table. Bibliographically 12mo (horizontal chain-lines on handmade paper) 5.25 inches tall. Ideally suited for rebinding as there is very little spine left and the contemporary leather binding is very badly worn (but treated and clean) and only just holding to the text block which itself is firm and appears complete, though that cannot be confirmed. Soft paper pages are clean and free of foxing - pleasingly so given the book's age. A few old and small ink stains here and there and with a contemporary handwritten text opposite the title page relating to the prices of silver tablespoons and silver teaspoons. Although suitable for rebinding the book retains a certain battered, well-used charm in its present state. 20% price reduction nowapplied.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. (Toby or Tobey - Fearing Family Bible) 2 volumes in 1. Quarto, 30 x 25 cm. Bound in contemporary full calf. Rebacked, with spine conserved. New red leather spine label with gilt. Marbled end sheets. Foxing, spotting, mostly to first few gatherings of pages. Offsetting to frontispiece illustration. Tex…t printed in two columns. [972] p. Plates, folded map. Shaw et Shoemaker, 3789. Family Records have extensive genealogical records of the Toby family. Also includes related manuscript genealogical ephemera for the Fearing family, tracing the Fearings from John Fearing of Cambridge, England, who settled in Massachusetts in 1635. Many of the entries appear to be by Hannah (Fearing) Bourne Toby. Hannah (1775-1859) was the daughter of Revolutionary War Major Israel Fearing and Lucy Bourne. Hannah married Joshua Toby (1772-1814) in 1796 in Plymouth Mass. They had four children, William Henry Tobey, Noah Fearing Tobey, Lucy Ann Tobey, Hannah Barnard Tobey (all born in Kinderhook, or Hudson, Columbia, New York). The book then passed to the family of William Henry Tobey (1799-1878). The final entry is for Mary Barnard Toby (1848-1936) and her husband Peter van Schaak Pruyn (1841-1891) of Kinderhook NY. This Bible was in the Toby family for over 133 years.

One of the first significant books to use principles derived from Roman and civil law sources, this influential treatise played an important role in the introduction of their ideas into Anglo-American jurisprudence. Kent admired this work, as did Marvin, who praised its "artistic and scholar-like finish" (Marvin). Sir William Jones was a distinguished Orientalist and a brilliant jurist. A friend of Johnson, Gibbon and Burke, he was a judge of the High Court at Calcutta from 1783 until his death. Marvin, Legal Bibliography 428-429. Contact seller5-star sellerFirst Edition. Boston: Samuel Etheridge, for John West, 1796. A Foundational Anglo-American Treatise: First American Edition of Jones on Bailments (1796) With Provenance Markings of Two Early Maryland Judges Jones, Sir William [1746-1794]. An Essay on the Law of Bailments. Boston: From the Press of Samuel Etheridge, For John Wes…t, 1796. 178, [1] pp. 12mo. (6-3/4" x 4"; 17 x 10.1 cm). Contemporary sheep, blind fillets, original red morocco gilt lettering piece to spine. Worn, front board detached, rear board partially detached but held by cords; chipping to spine ends, head abraded; lettering piece worn. Moderate toning, occasional light foxing. Early owner markings of Thomas J. Bullitt to front pastedown and title page, "A.C. Bullitt" (with the first "t" of the surname only faintly inked) to front pastedown, and "D.C. Hopper Emory" to front pastedown and front endleaf; contemporary bookseller's ticket ("Conrad & Co.") to front pastedown. $650. * First American edition, reprinted from the London edition of 1781. Jones's Essay on the Law of Bailments is among the earliest systematic treatments of the subject in English law and a foundational text in the development of Anglo-American commercial jurisprudence. Drawing extensively on Roman and continental civil law sources, it played a critical role in introducing comparative legal method into English and, subsequently, American legal thought. Its influence in the United States was profound: Joseph Story drew heavily on Jones in his Commentaries on the Law of Bailments (1832), which became the standard American authority; through Story and other jurists, Jones's synthesis of Roman-law principles became embedded in American common law doctrine. The work was widely cited by early American courts and commentators and helped standardize the classification and obligations of bailees in emerging commercial practice. Jones, an eminent jurist and Orientalist and a close associate of Johnson, Gibbon, and Burke, served as a judge of the Supreme Court of Judicature at Calcutta from 1783 until his death, where his engagement with non-English legal traditions informed his comparative approach. Provenance is of particular interest. Owned by Thomas James Bullitt (1763-1840), a prominent attorney, judge, banker, and landholder of Easton, Maryland, remembered as "an honest and sober practitioner, and a wise businessman" (Rawl). A purchas. Boston: Samuel Etheridge, for John West, 1796 (illustrator).
