A striking handbill informing San Francisco citizens of Mayor Eugene E. Schmitz's dramatic statement in the wake of the great earthquake and fire of 1906, authorizing federal troops and local law enforcement to use lethal force against "any and all persons found engaged in Looting or in the Commission of Any Other Crime." The document goes on to state that electric and gas will remain off until deemed safe ("You may therefore expect the city to remain in darkness for an indefinite time"), and that an informal curfew will be in effect from dusk until dawn "every night until order is restored." The San Francisco earthquake of April 18, 1906, resulted in the greatest loss of life from a natural disaster in California's history. More deadly than the quake itself were the fires caused by ruptured gas mains which raged throughout San Francisco for several days, killing thousands and destroying well over half of the city. San Francisco rebuilt with remarkable speed after the disaster, in part due to dramatic actions taken by Mayor Schmitz (who was later removed from office after being convicted of unrelated bribery charges), and the city hosted the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in 1915, as much to celebrate the restoration of the city as the completion of the canal. Another version of this proclamation exists, printed with simpler typesetting and entirely sans serif font. Both were printed by Altvater Print on Mission and 22nd Streets, and the reason for the variation is unclear. An impactful souvenir of a formative event in California history. Tanned, some small chips to edges. Backed on black cardboard and foamcore. Very good.
