Meditando aparecio por primera vez en la Biblioteca Quisqueyana y analiza temas muy variados.Es la obra postuma de Hostos y recoge su celebre ensayo sobre Hamlet.Eugenio Maria de Ho…stos comenzo un prolongado recorrido en 1871, a favor de la causa cubana, que lo llevo por tierras de Hispanoamerica. Visito Caracas, Bogota, Santiago de Chile, Valparaiso, Buenos Aires y Rio de Janeiro, siempre observando y comprendiendo las realidades hispanoamericanas.En esta epoca escribio un juicio critico del Hamlet de Shakespeare, que se integro en la obra Meditando (1909), un compendio de ensayos escritos entre 1872 y 1900, en la que tambien se incluyeron Placido, Carlos Guido Spano, Guillermo Matta, Lo que no guiso el lirico Quisgueyana, Jose Maria Samper, Salome Urena de Henriquez, entre otros.La figura y los escritos de Hostos resultan particularmente interesantes como expresion de la peculiar situacion socio-historica antillana de la segunda mitad del siglo XIX. Por entonces se intento, a traves de la teoria y de la accion, trabajar por la independencia, la reforma educativa y la dignificacion de la cultura caribena.El trabajo e ideas de Hostos han influido en el discurso intelectual de America Latina por mas de 125 anos, haciendo una tremenda contribucion a la identidad, la cultura y el desarrollo politico caribeno. Hostos fue un pensador moralista, cuyas ideas se muestran en sus escritos, que buscan en su esencia, la moral y la etica pedagogica en la educacion.Este autor representa el pensamiento antillano de la integracion latinoamericana y del fortalecimiento de la educacion como unico camino para el progreso de este pueblo que tiene un futuro promisorio. (.)El partido republicano, ya victorioso, empezo por aplazar la ley de abolicion; pero urgido de nuevo por influencias exteriores, repuso en debate el proyecto atormentado. Lo que habia sido necesario para los radicales cuando eran en el poder les parecio fuera de el un gran peligro y llovieron mociones radicales en contra de la abolicion inmediata.
