At the time of the Conquest of Mexico, teh Aztec "empire" and the other civilized areas of the Mexican plateau subsisted on a highly developed agriculture. As the Spaniards moved north from the Valley of Mexico into the unsettled country, they organized close-knit feudal estates, which eventually were known as haciendas. By the seventeenth century the cattle and sheep barons had become the most powerful and influential men in Mexico and their great landed estates virtually independent domains.
