Kunstenaar Jef Geys (1934-2018) gaf bijna dertig jaar les in de Rijksmiddelbareschool van het Kempense dorp Balen. Hij deed dat eigenzinnig en bracht re le kunst in de klas en de school. Tegelij…k maakte hij de klas en de school tot een hecht bestanddeel van zijn kunst. De dubbelzinnigheid typeerde Geys. Altijd rusteloos aan het werk, met een controversieel imago en dito kunst, levend in zijn dorp. Het wonderlijke samenspel tussen de internationale kunst en Geys? oprechte interesse, zelfs nieuwsgierigheid naar het alledaagse leven. Bart Janssen, Koen Peeters en Jef Van Eynde gingen op zoek naar sporen en getuigen van zijn werk. Zij praatten uitgebreid met ruim 40 mensen in Balen en omstreken. Collega-leraars, leerlingen en vrienden vertelden hun herinneringen, toonden hun unieke souvenirs. Zij spelen de hoofdrol in dit boek, in woord en beeld. Tegelijk word gezocht naar sporen van de leraar en de school in het oeuvre van de kunstenaar. Dit blijken de bronnen van zijn niet-traditioneel lesgeven: de revolutionaire jaren 1920, de didactiek van Paulo Freire, de tijdsgeest, het engagement van Geys zelf . Samen met curator Luk Lambrecht, Pascal Gielen en onderzoekers van PXL-MAD School of Arts wordt vanuit kunstwetenschappelijke, pedagogische en maatschappelijke hoek op zijn werk teruggekeken. Dit verhaal is nooit eerder verteld. In de microkosmos van een Kempense rijksschool verschijnt de internationale kunstenaar als social bewogen, genereus en, vooral, veelzinnig 730 g.
