The third pop up that depicts cats on bicycles has lost the standing cat standing figure to the far right and the cat holding the basket on the left has separated from the pop up mechanism. Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket. First Edition. Boards rubbed and worn with some loss of paper at margins. Gutters split at hinges, with spine mull visible. Lacking front free endpaper. Contemporary owner's inscription on title page. First and third pop-up scene each with tear across main lower part of scene. A fairy in the second scene has lost her right hand. Unfortunately most of the central character Jack is missing from the fourth scene, only his legs remaining. Fifth scene has hinged tab on facing leaf becoming detached, and with tears to the scene itself where the tab is attached, this scene thus lying flat rather than popping up. No repairs or restoration attempted. Overall the sixth scene is the only one in very good working order, the first and third scenes are close to VG, but each have a tear without loss. The second and fourth have some pieces actually missing, a small piece on the second scene, a large one on the fourth. The fifth has tears and lies flat rather than popping up. ; No date [1896]. 14 leaves + 6 chromolithograph pop-up scenes. Illustrated papered boards with green cloth spine. Pictorial boards. Condition: Very good. The first edition of Peeps into Fairyland: A Panorama Picture Book of Fairy Stories, with an introduction by Frederick Weatherly. (illustrator). First Edition. Oblong quarto, [28pp]. Illustrated paper boards, green cloth spine. Floral endpapers, with small bookseller's label on front pastedown. Complete with six chromolithographed pop-up illustrations, the "framed scene" variety, each with two cloth strap opening mechanisms. Bound with both green and red cloth spines, no priority established. Notable wear to both illustrated boards, bumped corners, light soiling along edges. Generally clean within text block, a few thumbprints along fore-edge. Stable binding, an attractive Victorian Era pop-up book, scarce in any condition. This collection of six fairy tales includes: Jack and the Beanstalk, The Babes in the Wood, Fly-away Flock, The Fairy Fir-cones, Naughty Noel, and Peeps into Fairyland. This work by F.E. Weatherly was a precursor to his more famous narratives in the Beatrix Potter series.

Oblong 4to, orig pictorial boards on original cloth spine. 6 full page, coloured fold out stand up scenes, one to illustrate each story. The illustrations are in remarkably good condition with no obvious loss or restoration ( although the head of the wand in ' Fairy Lake' is slightly creased). A little thumb marking and rubbing to boards and some pages but a delightful example of a charming book.

A few wrong folds are strengthened on back (invisibly) but all sorts of other fragile pieces such as arms with raised whips, ribbons flying, outstretched fingers etc are all intact. The text page edges have fared less well with some edge loss now skillfully repaired but never affecting any print. The pop-up leaves are on thicker and better quality paper and have edge rubbing but no tears to edges. Some of the struts may have been reglued or repaired (invisibly). The pages have been resewn and the book is now fully stable and all pop-ups work (MONTANARO 335). *The pop-up scanned is one with repair to part of a head but also allows you to see the detailed complexity of the pop-ups that have survived beautifully. 1 volume. The pop-ups are all complete and in working order with only part of one stag's horn in facsimile. One pony's tail re-attached from the back & a few wrong folds strengthened on back (invisibly). All sorts of fragile pieces such as duck heads, ribbons flying, fingers etc are all intact. The text page edges have fared less well with some edge fingering and some edge chips but never affecting any print. The pop-up leaves are on thicker and better quality paper and have edge rubbing but no tears to edges (MONTANARO 335). 1 volume. Hardcover.
