Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Second Edition. The Observer's Book of British Geology - Observer's Book No. 10. Printer's code: 865.960 which I believe indicates that the book was printed in Sep 1960. The book, which was the tenth of the series, was first published in 1949 (as British Geology), revised in 1952, and then revised more thoroughly in 1971. There were five different jacket designs. Describing the principle Rocks, Minerals and Fossils with 170 in black-and-white and 12 pages in colour. With a five-page Foreword by Professor H. L. Hawkins. ***Near fine in light-brown textured boards with black titles to the spine and front board. The covers are clean and unmarked, with none of the usual fading. No bumps, creases or tears. Corners sharp. No reading lean to the binding. Page block edges clean. Internally the book is also near fine with neat ownership details in pencil at the top of the front free endpaper, but no other annotations. Printed on nice quality glossy paper. No creases or tears. No cracking to the binding. Spine tight. ***In a very good colour illustrated dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of 5/- net. The dustwrapper is complete, with no areas of loss - just very light rubbing at the extremities, commensurate with age and handling, mainly at the top and tail of the spine, and at the corner tips of the foldovers. There is also a very light stain at the bottom of the spine and bottom corner of the front panel. The spine is not browned, and there is none of the usual fading to the red titles. ***147mm x 95mm. 267 pages including a seven-page Index at the back of the book. ***'This book has been written with the object of helping the Observer interested in the study of Geology. But he cannot be too strongly reminded that geology is not learned from books, but that knowledge must be obtained from first-hand information. In these pages the Author describes the Rocks, Minerals and Fossils so that the Observer may be aided in recognising things which he seeks--and sees.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***A 1960 later printing, in very good original condition. Whilst the Observer's books from this period are not uncommon, many of the books were handled by children and consequently show a lot of wear and tear. They can prove to be quite hard to track down now in nice condition, especially in the original unclipped dustwrapper. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.

The spine is not browned, and there is none of the usual fading to the red titles. ***147mm x 95mm. 214 pages including a nine-page Index at the back of the book. ***'Whether we are aware of it or not, Geology--the study of the substances that make up the earth's surface and the changes which they have undergone--impinges on the lives of all of us. Our building materials, fuels and countless other products that are used in our everyday life have geological origins. In the country, the scenery that we go to enjoy, the patterns of land use and even the routes we follow are evidence of geological factors, past or present. This book illustrates, and describes in simple language for the general reader, not only the basic minerals, rocks and fossils which make up our planet but also the dramatic, if gradual changes which have sculptured its surface in the way we now see.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***A 1974 second reprint of the 1971 revised edition, in very good original condition.
