A very nice copy of this scarce 1st edition that was first serialised in Home Magazine in 1898 and later belonged to the late East Sussex naturalist Ralfe Whistler and was in his famous dodo memorabilia collection.

Light bumping and slight fraying to the other corners. One inch patch of surface damage to the front panel of the boards about two inches from the bottom. Light fading to the spine and a few light marks to the boards. The gilt lettering and decorations are all quite bright and clear however. Gilt page edges are nice and bright and unmarked. The front and rear endpapers have a little tearing over the hinge and some browning. Gift message to a previous owner on the first blank page after the front endpapers with this dated 25/12/01. This series of books was generally published for the the Christmas market with the publication year given as the year after the Christmas when they were available for sale. The binding is a little slack and there is a gap showing just before the text of the book. There are a few light brown spots and stains to the pages but they are generally clean and unmarked. Illustrated in black and white by Alan Wright. First printing.
