"The town consisted of two parts. Up on the hill where the eucalyptus trees had been taught to grow, were the homes of the well-to-do ranchers and miners who, for mysterious reasons understandable only by the natives of the great Southwest, had retired from active life, and built their houses in the "city". They led dreary lives up on the hill where the eucalyptus trees grew thick enough to make a show at a distance, but not thick enough to make a shade. The sun upon the brow of that hill was as hot as it could be in any part of that hot State." /Chapter 1.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. (no dust jacket) [moderate shelfwear, some browning/spotting to page edges, light bumps and slight fraying to cloth at bottom corners, one-time owner's signature in pencil on ffep, tiny tear at fore-edge of title page]. Crime novel that segues to a Western setting about halfway through (hence the Western-motif front-cover decoration of a man on horseback waving a large hat), by this prolific pulp novelist, one of eleven books he wrote under the Baxter pseudonym between 1923 and 1935. This tells the exploits of "Geraldi, dashing knight errant, [who] is a modern Robin Hood who preys only upon those who have preyed upon others." Originally serialized in Western Story Magazine in 1928; later published (as by Max Brand) as "Three on the Trail," and subsequently in paperback as "Gunman's Goal." [The original serial title was probably "Tragedy Trail," although I've not verified this directly; another seller claims it was "Three on the Trail," but that title does not appear among the list of serials credited to Baxter during 1928.] (**).

Debut novel by the Kenyan-Canadian author, blending pop culture, Egyptology, science fiction, and gaming. "Coyote Kings is a contemporary urban fantasy about two friends super-intelligent fanboys Hamza and Yehat who dream of adventure and glory.only to find they've lost their way and their dreams in a world of minimum-wage jobs, actual adult responsibilities and the shocking absence of killer robots, cloned dinosaurs or interstellar spaceships. The arch-villains are a band of miscreant Trekkie/burglars led by a faux-Victorian dandy who has a penchant for liberally dousing his speech with bad sci-fi metaphors, the love interest just happens to be a 7,000 year-old Ethiopian supermodel/assassin with a yen for Alan Moore comics, and somewhere in there is a secret conspiracy by two wealthy third-world art dealers to take over the Universe-As-We-Know-It" (from the publicity sheet). Finalist for the Philip K. Dick Award, the Locus Best First Novel Award, and the Compton-Cook Award.
