Although an Australian national, Guy Boothby lived the majority of his life in England. He is best known for such works as the Dr Nikola series, about an occultist criminal mastermind; the character was a Victorian forerunner to Fu Manchu, and Pharos, the Egyptian, a tale of Gothic Egypt, mummies' curses and supernatural revenge. Rudyard Kipling was a personal friend and mentor of Boothby's, and George Orwell cites Boothby's books as influential, and remembered with affection. Contains (vi), 306 pp + 6 pp publishers catalogue, with monochrome illustrations by A Wallis Mills throughout. Contains 16-(a), 396 printed pages of text with five tissue-guarded full-page monochrome illustrations. Such is the standard of workmanship we believe this to be privately commissioned or perhaps an exhibition or competition piece. A series of philosophical writings in blank verse, reflecting the author's state of mind following several bereavements, it was one of the most popular poems of the century, influencing Goethe and Edmund Burke. Contains frontispiece engraving, A2, [blank], 315 pp + 3 pp publisher's listings. Engraving is printed to the verso of the first leaf, rear end paper absent, staining from the leather turn-in's front and back. This volume, along with other books of the period, came from the family estate of Sir Frederick Treves, SIGNED by his father William Treves to the front free end paper 'William Treves - Dorchester', green heraldic bookplate of Reverend Nathaniel Thornbury, Avening, Gloucestershire to the front paste down.
