Hardcover. Condition: Like New. Octavo. Hardcover. Teal dj with bw illustration and black text, gray boards. 264 pages, 27 illustrations, 25 in color. This expanded and updated edition of an in-demand, out-of-print title includes over 80 letters written between artists Lyonel Feininger (1871-1956) and Mark Tobey (1890-1976), fro…m the time of their first meeting in 1944 to Feininger's death in 1956. An essay by Peter Selz, entitled "Parallel Visions," offers an introduction to the artists' friendship, and a chronology further clarifies their intersecting lives. Two brief reciprocal catalogue essays--one by Feininger about Tobey, and one by Tobey about Feininger--conclude the volume. Several paintings discussed in the letters are reproduced as color plates, along with a selection of the letters themselves.

Contact seller5-star sellerFirst edition. Attractive little exhibition catalogue showcasing late works by the German-American expressionist painter, Lyonel Feininger (1871-1956). This copy has a tremendous connection to the Northwest art scene of the time, being not only signed by Feininger, but inscribed by Seattle Abstract Expressionist, Mark Tobey (189…0-1976) to the art gallery owner who represented both artists and helped them come to prominence on the west coast, Otto D. Seligman (1890-1966). Tobey wrote the text for this booklet, Feininger being a close friend. Seligman emigrated to America in 1946 and opened his gallery in Seattle's University District in 1953. He sponsored Tobey and other Northwest artists such as Guy Anderson, Paul Bonifas, Morris Graves, and others. Seligman also handled the work of Feininger, many of his paintings passing through the gallery before being sold to museums in the area. The two artists' friendship is also well documented, with Feininger describing Tobey's work as: "breathtakingly expressive and beautiful [that creates a] truly elevated feeling of satisfaction, humility [.] spiritually and formally." An item with a tangible link to three influential figures in the midcentury art world of the Pacific Northwest. . 17x12cm, [16]pp. Black and white facsimiles throughout, text by Mark Tobey. Signed by Feininger on the inside front cover. Additionally inscribed by Tobey to Otto [Seligman] and dated in 1954. Staple bound in illustrated yellow card wrappers. Some rubbing and toning to wraps, clean internally and very good.
