Half Leather Hardback. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. 1887. Presumed first edition. viii, 171pp., 3 engraved plates. Ferdinand Adolf Kehrer (1837-1914) was a German gynecologist who was a native of Guntersblum in Rhenish Hesse. He studied medicine at the University of Giessen under Ferdinand von Ritgen, at Munich with Karl von He…cker and in Vienna under Karl von Braun-Fernwald. From 1872 to 1881, he was a professor of obstetrics at the University of Giessen.Kehre is probably best remembered for performing the first modern Caesarean section, and his procedure that minimizes bleeding is still widely used today. This book is the second part of his study of comparative and experimental obstetrics, and looks at the comparative physiology of the birth of man and other suckling animals. The case of the book is in need of repair as both boards are detached with shelf wear and scuffing to the leather. There is a library label on the front fixed endpaper. About 1 1/2" of the leather is missing from the top of the spine and about 1/2" from the bottom. The pages are securely bound and clean apart from foxing on the endpapers and first and last few pages. There is some scattered lighter foxing elsewhere within the book. There is soiling on the back of the last plate and around the top corner of the title page. The title page has a small stamp and the top edges of some pages are dusty.
