Now universally known as 'STC,' it has become indispensable to historians, literary scholars, and bibliographers, whose work involves printed sources before the Civil War. This second part of the second revised edition (I-Z) was the first to be published in 1976, while Volume I covering A-H was first published in 1980; it was followed by a third volume, containing the addenda and supplementary materials.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Second Edition. Two massively heavy, oversized volumes, complete, bound in publisher's cloth over boards, being a very dark blue, and with gilt lettering to spines. Bruising to a couple of tips, slight smudging to bottom tips, bowing to front board of Volume I, else clean, tightly bound, unmarked and bright of interiors. Bright and shiny dust jackets, illustrated, little worn, protected by plastic coats. Katherine F. Pantzer finished the revisions and enlargements of W.A. Jackson and F.S. Ferguson in 1946 upon the original edition as compiled by A.W. Pollard and G.R. Redgrave in 1927. There are now roughly 36,000 entries, thus an incomparable reference tool for booksellers, librarians, rare book collectors and archivists. This revised and enlarged edition also corrected earlier mistakes. One then contemporary reviewer remarked that this was "the most meticulous and definitive extended work of bibliography, in any language and on any subject, ever achieved." Volume I comprises entries for A-H and was published in 1986. Volume II covers I-Z and was published in 1976. There was eventually published a third volume devoted to A Printers' & Publishers' Index, Other Indexes & Appendices, Cumulative Addenda & Corrigenda. This S.T.C. is an "imprint catalogue" (five words, max) of every book or broadside printed in England from the beginning of printing in 1476 to 31 December 1640. Covered also are any publications in languages other than British English (e.g., Gaelic, Scottish, etc.). Entries are about, among many other topics, 16th-century bibles and prayerbooks, and then "classic" works by Chapman, Holinshed, Shakespeare, Sidney and Spenser, and then also Greek texts printed at Eton, Italian-language erotica with false imprints produced in London, Irish texts printed in Holland, and so on. Volume I: liii, 620 pp.; Volume II: xi, 494 pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 3 volumes, 4to (31.5 cm), LIII, 620 pp; XI, 494 pp; XIX, 405 pp. Publisher's cloth (dust jacket of the volume III only, bookplates, dust jacket slightly stained and frayed at extremities, small stain on the frond board of the vol. 2). This is the second edition of STC, a revision of the initial 1927 edition, undertaken in 1946 by F. S. Ferguson and W. A. Jackson and completed by Katharine F. Pantzer. Volume 2 was published in 1976, volume 1 in 1986, and volume 3 in 1991. "STC was instantly recognized as a major reference source for the scholarly world, in libraries, bookshops, and university departments. Its initials set the fashion for acronyms for such works that has grown and flourished since. Reference to it ipso facto improved the standard of identification of early English books. Gradually, not only the book professionals but students of literature and, subsequently, theology and history, began to realize the formidable strengths of the implement that had been put into their hands." (from the preface.) Volume 3 of the present edition breaks new ground in providing annotated indexes of printers and publishers and places of business in London and elsewhere. It also adds, in a series of appendices, up-to-date summaries of critical aspects of the organization of the London book trade. (Breslauer & Folter 156).
