She was graduated from Syracuse University in 1960 and received her Master's Degree in English from the University of Wisconsin. From the start of her writing career Miss Oates has earned high literary acclaim and countless literary awards, among them a Guggenheim Fellowship for 1967-68 and the Richard and Hinda Rosenthal Foundation Award of the National Institute of Arts and Letters. Ju this year she was honored with the Lotos Club Award of Merit and became a member of the National Society of Literature and the Arts. For her novel them she won the National Book Award in 1970. Her most recent novel, Do With What You Will received nationwide praise and was a major selection of the Literary Guild of America. In addition to her six novels, Miss Oates has had published two volumes of critical essays and three volumes of poetry; four of her plays have been produced in New York. Her many stories have been widely anthologized in literary and mass-circulation magazines. Those in THE POISONED KISS and other stories from the Portuguese add still a new dimension to Miss Oates's art.
