Miembro de la Orden de Predicadores, debía orientar su vida y obra a la or…atoria y los temas religiosos pero su curiosidad intelectual y su capacidad de absorción de los conocimientos de su época le capacitaron para una peculiar síntesis de saberes. En aquellas horas tan bajas de la ciencia española, un tratado aparatosamente titulado El porqué de todas las cosas no podía ocultar ni sus limitaciones ni su objetivo trascendente. A pesar de ser una colección de preguntas y respuestas sobre temas de filosofía natural en la línea de losProblemata aristotélicos, la segunda parte de la obra revela un diverso procedimiento didáctico por el cual se extrae la lección moral oculta en el funcionamiento de la naturaleza o en la constitución del cuerpo humano, sin desdeñar algunos aspectos en apariencia nimios o sorprendentes. La escisión entre las dos partes del libro lo convierte en una precisa metáfora del estado de la cultura española a finales del siglo XVII: una exposición imposible de conocimientos científicos en su mayoría ya presentes en la Edad Media y una búsqueda de explicación final metafísica cargada del más profundo pesimismo moral del Barroco hispano.
