Pendant et après la Première Guerre mondiale, il faisait partie, avec son frère, le sculpteur Oscar Jespers et le dadaïste Paul Joostens, du cercle entourant le poète et critique Paul van Ostaijen qui subit l'influence du fauvisme, de l'expressionnisme, du cubisme et du futurisme européens. Dans les années vingt, il rejoint les groupes Sélection et Centaure opérant à Bruxelles. (.) Son uvre post-expressionniste est extrêmement variée grâce à sa maîtrise de différents médias : en plus des peintures à l'huile, il est l'auteur de nombreux dessins, gravures et peintures sous verre où les thèmes ruraux alternent avec les scènes de cirque. Dans ses thèmes urbains d'inspiration satirique, il stylise souvent ave un formalisme tendant vers l'art déco. Les sombres années trente marquent un tournant : Floris Jespers opère un revirement vers une peinture traditionnelle. (.) Il contribue cependant aussi à la renaissance de l'art monumental avec ses projets de tapis pour les expositions universelles de Paris et New York.
