Hardcover. Condition: VG. Dust Jacket Condition: None. Photos (illustrator). Second. None. Second. 22cm By 15cm. First published in 1933 this book was to become, and remains, one of the most controversial of WWI's aviation combat stories, beacuse of its "action" photographs. The text material is based on the dairy and letters of an unnamed flying office who was also responsible for most of the illustrations. The authenticity of these has always been regraded with suspicion. Apart from the frontis of pilots gathered by their aircraft, the 48 other photos all purport to be taken during combat missions. Whatever the truth there are some remarkable scenes of WWI aircraft Allied and German in various attitudes, including a mid-air smash and pic number 23 "Dog fight" with 14 biplanes in frame. A classic of WWI aviation wherether "true or false." 159 pages, 49 b/w photos. Black hard covers with gilt spine titles VG with few small spots, marks, light edgewear. Ink gift insc top front pastedown. Light foxing few early, late pages, occasionally elsewhere, mainly adjacent full page plates. Two plates partly loose, but still attached at gutter.
