Pese a su título, la obra es, en realidad, una guía católica para la vida, de un tono semejante al de las obras de emblemas y casi un precedente para las de tradición estoica que se prolongarán a lo largo del siglo XVII. De unas y otras se diferencia claramente porque incluye 'amores', 'aquello que conviene desear y cómo', de estricta observancia católica (Dios, los ángeles, los santos, la virgen.), haciendo además un hincapié en los males que acarrea la inobservancia del comportamiento debido, que está ausente en aquellas. Pero con ellas comparte, sin embargo, una propuesta de la virtud en el término medio en el amor a las personas, los enemigos, las riquezas, las mujeres, la amistad, la honra, los halagos, la familia., acudiendo a citas y anécdotas de los clásicos griegos y latinos, así como de los textos sagrados católicos y de los padres de la Iglesia. Una idea cabal de la popularidad que alcanzó el Tratado del amor de Dios en su momento la daba el supuesto amigo de Cervantes que, en el prólogo del Quijote, le aconsejaba mejorar su obra con citas y referencias, indicándole de dónde tomarlas para que su Quijote fuese bien recibido: " Si tratáredes de amores, con dos onzas que sepáis de la lengua toscana, toparéis con León Hebreo que os hincha las medidas. Y si no queréis andaros por tierras estrañas, en vuestra casa tenéis a Fonseca, Del amor de Dios, donde se cifra todo lo que vos y el más ingenioso acertare a desear en tal materia". Curiosamente, el texto de Fonseca recibió, casi siglo y medio despues de publicado por primera vez, cuando ya estaba casi olvidado, una censura del Índice para que se tachase una frase que nada hablaba de religión: la que ponía como ejemplo de cobardía a "los Aragoneses sobre defender.
