Hardback. Condition: Very Good. 2nd Edition. De Fontmell, E. V. (pseudonym of Eugene Virgo, born in Fontmell Magna, Dorset -- thus the quasi-pseudonym). Forbidden Marches. London: The Scholartis, Press. 1929. Second edition. Octavo, pp. [1-8] 1-241 [242-244: blank]. Original red cloth, spine panel stamped in black. Early dated ink ownership signature on front free endpaper. Binding slightly leaned, spine cloth just a touch faded, several tiny black spots to front panel, otherwise a clean very good copy. Rather uncommon. #3463. $45. Novel of pagan survival in contemporary Italy, more specifically the presence of classical wood nymph. She is perceived by several characters but commands the attention especially of Dorian Vane, whose young mother, a devotee of Demeter, had died in childbirth. The theme of pagan survivals and revivals formed a staple of popular fiction in the interbellum period, especially in Britain where it often blended with a strain of Hellenistic nostalgia. The author's treatment of the theme seems fairly typical for the period. "Fantasy novel set in Italy about a wood nymph." -- Locke, Spectrum vol. I, p. 66, who notes that the first edition was bound in black cloth with gold stamping, which means the "Second Impression" statement on the present book's title page is inaccurate: this is a new edition. In keeping with the common practice of this semi-fine-press publisher in the 1920s, the first edition was small, limited to 500 copies in this case, with the first 50 signed and numbered. Evidently, some demand for the book persisted after those 500 copies were sold, so this more modest version was produced. All editions are presently uncommon. Bleiler (1978), p. 58. Day, Supplemental Checklist, p. 24. Reginald 05506.
