small-8°, paperback edition. Condition: Gut. 16th printing,. Biographer of Broadway complete & unabridged 237 pages, text in English, colored book edges, illustrated cover, table of contents, edges slightly rubbed, otherwise in good condition, Alfred Damon Runyon (October 4, 1880 December 10, 1946) was an American journalist and short-story writer. Darunter sind Little Miss Marker, The Hottest Gy in the World und Lady for a Day. He was best known for his short stories celebrating the world of Broadway in New York City that grew out of the Prohibition era. To New Yorkers of his generation, a "Damon Runyon character" evoked a distinctive social type from Brooklyn or Midtown Manhattan. The adjective Runyonesque refers to this type of character and the type of situations and dialog that Runyon depicts. He spun humorous and sentimental tales of gamblers, hustlers, actors, and gangsters, few of whom go by "square" names, preferring instead colorful monikers such as "Nathan Detroit", "Benny Southstreet", "Big Jule", "Harry the Horse", "Good Time Charley", "Dave the Dude", or "The Seldom Seen Kid". Youll enjoy meeting some of Mr. Runyons friends, socially. Youll like Harry the Horse and spanish john and Little Isadore - hard characters, perhaps, but they would be hurt if you called them kidnapers. Then theres Big False Face, the Beer Baron. The police sent him to college at a place Auburn, N. Y., and he also did post-graduate work at Ossining and Dannemora. And youll meet Princess OHara and Goldberg, her horse, named after a guy who runs a delicatessen store on Tenth Avenue, and Last Card Louie, and The Brain himself. A veritable banquet is contained in these pages for all those who like their Runyon straight. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 120.
