Bound in full contemporary sheep, binding badly worn, boards detached, spine destroyed; text block sound with some foxing, 368 pages including index, plus 16-pages catalog of books dated July 1843. "The historic Underwood Treatise, from the ninth English edition, with notes by S. Merriman, MD and Marshall Hall MD, and with notes by John Bell MD." Mormon association: book bears the signature "Mark H. Forscutt" on the detached front free endpaper, signature appears to be over a previous owner's name; and in the upper corner of the front pastedown "Library No. 238 / M. H. Forscutt" written in old ink. Forscutt was a close associate of Joseph Smith III and produced the Reorganized Church's first hymnbook in 1889.

"Combined so that tunes could be matched from 'Saints' harmony' to words in 'Saints' harp.'" - Flake Mark Hill Forscutt (1834-1903) was an English hymn writer and a leader in a few denominations of the Latter-day Saint Movement. He was a convert to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, however he broke with that movement for numerous reasons, one of which was the practice of plural marriage. He then went on to serve in leadership positions in the Morrisite sect, and ultimately in the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
