Pages… are virtually and intact except for browning and smudges on front and back endpapers and light age toning. Covers are virtually pristine and intact except for light rubbing and slight wear to extremities. Binding is tight. A Near Fine copy. Part of the Lakeside Classics series. This volume contains two autobiographical accounts that include historical documentation about the War of 1812, the Journal of Thomas Vercheres de Boucherville and The Capitulation which is credited to the enigmatic James Foster. Edited by Milo Milton Quaife. Boucherville was a French Canadian who worked as a fur trader and then later enlisted in the British Army to fight against the United States during the War of 1812. In The Capitulation, Foster offers an American perspective of the war. Quaife writes that while Foster's account provides invaluable documentation about the war, Foster's authorship is questionable. Quaife begins by noting that Foster is only listed as the copyright-holder of the original publication. He then discusses the debate over Foster's identity and concludes that he was either indeed an Ohio Volunteer who served in General William Hull's army (but for some reason was hesitant to identify himself, writing under the pseudonym of "Ohio Volunteer") or an unknown individual, perhaps a journalist, whose purported first-hand account is instead a compilation of existing sources (Quaife notes that part of Foster's account bears an uncanny resemblance to that of Robert Lucas, another Ohio Volunteer in Hull's army). Both accounts are notable for their inclusion of documentation about one of the first battles of the War of 1812, the Battle of Fort Dearborn (also known as the Fort Dearborn Massacre) which took place on August 15, 1812. This battle was quick and decisive but resulted in a disastrous and tragic defeat for the Americans. The Publisher's Preface briefly summarizes the battle and events leading up to it. The Preface portrays Hull's decisions relating to the battle as being miscalculated and lacking in courage. Hull's response to the British capture of Fort Mackinac is described as being a notable factor in his misguided recommendation to evacuate nearby Fort Dearborn to Fort Wayne. General Nathan Heald is also portrayed as being the other key figure of the battle's disastrous outcome. The Preface says that Heald had misinterpreted Hull's recommendation as a firm order (Hull had apparently only ordered an evacuation if it were practical) and refused to listen to any advice to the contrary (two of Heald's officers and a friendly Potawatomi chief, Chief Winnemeg, had apparently argued for Heald to stay as they were convinced Fort Dearborn was well-equipped enough to withstand a siege). However, Heald was intent on evacuating Fort Dearborn, so he had the fort's ninety-three inhabitants comprising American soldiers, militiamen, and civilian women and children march toward Fort Wayne. While en route, the group, despite being escorted by friendly Miami warriors, was ambushed and overtaken by hostile Potawatomi warriors. Fifty-two of the people in the group were killed; the rest were taken hostage. Fort Dearborn was destroyed but later rebuilt in 1816.
