He wrote: Essays, in a Series of Letters (1804), and Essay on the Evils of Popular Ignorance (1820), in which he urges the necessity of a national system of education." Very lightly foxed; light wear and rubbing to exterior edges and spine head; else a Near Fine(-) very crisp and unopened copy. First edition (presumed; no earlier dates stated).

John Foster (1770-1843) was an English Baptist minister, serving in various parts of England and Ireland, and an essayist. Volume 1 contains Chapters 1-6 of the Life (1770-1826), and Letters 1 to 140 (also up to 1826).

As noted, both front covers detached, otherwise the volumes have only light shelfwear, rear joint of volume I starting to separate a bit, a light scratch to the lower spine label of volume II, but internally fresh and clean, with light foxing to frontis only. Foster was a noted theologian of his time whose primary dissent with church doctrine involved "Duration of Future Punishment", which is treated at length in some of the letters included in the work. .
