Early county records and court proceedings reveal the names of the early settlers. Volume 2 includes: a description of the mountains; the early history of Asheville and the surrounding towns; Civil War and Reconstruction; roads and transportation; buildings, schools, and churches; agriculture and industries; and biographies of prominent citizens. The destruction of records in a courthouse fire makes these volumes particularly valuable as the only source for much of the information they contain.
