Print on Demand Edition 2008. Vol. 1, (xiv), 456 pp. + illus.; Vol. 2, 457-916 pp., index + illus (ISBN 978-0-87152-564-2 LC 77-24692) This two-volume history of Buncombe County in the North Carolina mountains begins with an account of the Indian inhabitants of the region and proceeds through a discussion of Spanish and French explorations in America to the English proprietorship of North Carolina. The early expeditions into and settlement of the mountains of the state led to the formation of Buncombe County in 1792. Early county records and court proceedings reveal the names of the early settlers. Volume 2 includes: a description of the mountains; the early history of Asheville and the surrounding towns; Civil War and Reconstruction; roads and transportation; buildings, schools, and churches; agriculture and industries; and biographies of prominent citizens. The destruction of records in a courthouse fire makes these volumes particularly valuable as the only source for much of the information they contain.
