Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. This tale is the sequel to Marta's Heart. Ivette, or Ivy, is Marta's third daughter. The story opens in the summer of 1897, as Marta is working as a schoolteacher where her husband, Daniel, is the headmaster. Together, they have six children, four girls and two boys. Ivy is 14, a tomboy, and a snoop, as she spies on her older sister, Anna. Anna's 16, and ready for romance; whereas Ivy prefers to hide out in her treehouse and sneak a peek into her mother's diary. Over the next two years, Ivy will evolve and blossom as she, too, discovers romance, something she swore she'd never embrace. Tragedies and triumphs will turn the tomboy into a woman, who will become a nurse, a wife, and a mother by the age of 17. When I wrote Marta's Heart, which begins in 1870, I began to think about my protagonist, who is 14 when the story opens, as a woman in her forties, with six children of her own. The seeds for a sequel were planted when I decided to focus on Marta's third daughter, Ivette, and tell her story as a 14-year-old girl living in 1897. As book 2 came to life, I knew this story would become a trilogy. Book 3, which is still being edited, will begin in 1924, where 14-year-old Gladys, or Glady, gets into all kinds of mischief, much to the dismay of Ivy, her mother. Six generations of females will prevail as a new baby is born in chapter one while Granny Eliza, Marta's mother, continues to thrive. This item is printed on demand. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. My dad came to America from Sicily at age 2. His folks were poor farmers in search of the American dream. All 4 grandparents were born in the Old Country and none of them ever returned once they arrived in America. I grew up around dozens of Italian relatives and hundreds of neighbors who were like me. I was 10 when I realized not everyone ate the way we did. My first week of college was a culture shock when I first tasted the bland cafeteria food. That's when I began to discover the wonders and warmth of growing up with a love of the Mediterranean cuisine and the support of a huge extended family. I'm proud of my Italian heritage and that inspired me to create these 14 short stories. Most of them have a nonna who creates magic in her kitchen and adores her grandchildren. Each of them reflects what is important in life. Many of the stories are rooted in my experiences as a child growing up around bedlam and kindness while we passed around the breadbasket and thanked the Lord for the bounty before us. Kitchen table conversations were sacred and inspiring; late-night chats often helped us find our way in the darkness of this chaotic world. Each story has the potential to tug at your heart regardless of your own heritage. The message is clear; family is everything! Alla famiglia! This item is printed on demand. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Charlie and Maggie shared a womb and were born eight minutes apart. Their mother was gravely ill when they entered this world, living on a black dirt farm in New Hampshire with their two older brothers, their parents, and their grandparents. As their mother's health deteriorated, the woman forgot most of her words and simply called Maggie, Girl. When she wanted Charlie's attention, she yelled out, C'mere, which weighed on Charlie, who longed for his mother to remember his name. This is a coming-of-age story about farm life, family, and Charlie's thirst for his mother's affection. This tale was inspired by a man I am fond of who lost his mother when he was a child. At age 86, he is still sharp, and he sometimes tells me about being orphaned and growing up in poverty on his sister's farm. I asked him one day if his mother called him by his nickname or his given name and he smiled. Apparently, she didn't use either name towards the end of her life. He claimed she simply yelled out, C'mere, if she wanted his attention. His recollections of his difficult childhood touched my heart and planted a seed for this story. This item is printed on demand. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. In 1959, interracial marriage was illegal in some states. In 1967, the Supreme Court declared these state laws unconstitutional in Loving v. Virginia. Gay marriage became legal in all 50 states with the 2015 Supreme Court decision, Obergefell v Hodges. In 2025, the Rightwing extremists are pressuring the Court to overturn this decision and ban gay marriage or leave it to the states as they did with abortion rights in 2023 when Roe v Wade was overturned after 50 years. One must wonder if these extremists will be gunning for interracial marriage next. I wrote this love story about a Black man and a White man who fall in love in 1959 to drop a spotlight on how far we've come as a free society. Unfortunately, there are those who wish to turn back the clock and deny human rights to others. Freedom is something that we must continually fight for in this everchanging world. When an inexperienced White college grad falls head over heels in love with his former professor who happens to be male, Black, and a decade older, sparks begin to fly. But the sparks must remain in the shadows since the year is 1959 when gay relationships are forbidden in many states and gay marriage is a pipedream. Interracial marriages are illegal as well, but our two lovers opt to marry in front of loved ones, defying the prejudices and biases of politicians, clergymen and the masses. We love whom we love in this world and the opinions of others can never change that fact. This story is dedicated to the courageous souls who dare to love unconditionally and risk everything to accept their authentic selves. Assuming there is a God, one would expect that the Almighty Creator loves all of His or Her creations equally and without prejudice. Yet, millions of Americans continue to use their faith to condemn others from experiencing true love. This item is printed on demand. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. This is my story, at least partly. I was one of 13,000 people who were arrested during the first week of May, 1971, in Washington DC. We called ourselves the May Day Tribe and our mission was to turn traffic into gridlock to force President Nixon to end the draft and the Vietnam War. At the time, while we sat behind bars, it all seemed so hopeless, but in the end the antiwar protests changed the hearts of the American public and eventually forced the government to exit Southeast Asia and chalk it up to a foreign policy failure. The Vietnam War divided America down the middle after the government began drafting middleclass boys. This story is my story and the stories of a few of my friends. Some of them avoided the draft by fleeing to Canada while others came out as gay to fail their induction physical. Others capitulated and headed to boot camp with fear in their hearts. We were the generation who weren't celebrated like our fathers who came home as heroes after World War II. We were called freaks, flower children, dropouts, traitors, cowards, hippies, and effete snobs (VP Agnew's words). Those who wore the uniform were mocked as baby killers upon their return. Many came home without their limbs or their sanity. Thousands committed suicide because of the horrors of war. Over 58,000 never returned. But to us, we were just young people, baby boomers born after WW II, who yearned for peace, justice, and hope. This is our story. This item is printed on demand. Marta, who has five siblings, will eventually have six children of her own and Ivette, or Ivy, is her youngest daughter. Gladys, or Glady, is Marta's granddaughter and Ivy's younger daughter. Ivy will birth four children, two girls and two boys. The family will suffer deaths and tragedies, but they will continue to prevail and flourish during the time period that begins after the Civil War and continues into the decade following the Great War. The year is 1870, as six children, ages 7 to 15, bear the burden and responsibility of nursing their only parent, Eliza Weber, after their father is killed in war. They live just north of New York City, in a home that their deceased grandfather built, as they plot ways to keep a roof over their heads. They will be compelled to sell their mother's silverware to pay the taxes on their home, while the roof continues to leak, as Marta, the oldest daughter, searches for ways to keep the children fed. This is book 1 in a trilogy about a family who survives the aftermath of multiple wars, numerous tragedies, and a host of everyday challenges as their love and devotion to one another fans the flames of their hope and optimism. All she has left is her younger brother who ran away to join the Navy years ago and she's desperate to locate him while she searches for love and navigates the treacherous sea of securing tenure. She's charming, but admittedly, she's a klutz who is prone to white lies and spilling food all over herself.
