Helm was one of two officers who survived the tragedy of 1812. This, his account, was lost for nearly a century. Mrs. Helm, who was taken captive by the Indians, was the aunt of the editor, Nellie Kinzie Gordon. This work also relates how John Kinzie, who was the Indian Trader at Chicago, killed a jealous French trader who tried to murder Kinzie: the final chapter describes how Eleanor Lytle (later Mrs. John Kinzie) was taken captive by the Seneca tribe Illustrated with four plates.
