Giovane studente friulano antifascista, poi partigiano in C…arnia, l'autobiografia di Giancarlo Franceschinis ci restituisce il ricordo di una lotta di liberazione con tutti i suoi ideali e speranze, con tutte le sue difficoltà e i suoi problemi, e ci consegna la memoria di eroici partigiani e di una partecipazione di popolo che vide nella Repubblica libera della Carnia uno dei momenti più alti della Resistenza. Ma ci racconta anche i particolari della persecuzione subita da lui e da tanti suoi compagni, nel dopoguerra, dagli alleati anglo-americani, da formazioni pre-Gladio che imperversarono in Friuli e da una Repubblica antifascista nella Costituzione ma non epurata nell'apparato statale e poliziesco, in un contesto da guerra fredda in cui i comunisti dovevano di nuovo essere imprigionati ed emarginati. È l'odissea di un partigiano che non si è lasciato vincere e che è rimasto fedele ai suoi ideali per tutta la vita. Attraverso la storia personale di Giancarlo Franceschinis (1925 2019), dall'adolescenza udinese, a San Daniele, alla Carnia, al campo di concentramento di Rimini, e poi a Milano, si dipana la storia della Resistenza friulana, e poi quella del dopoguerra in Friuli e in Italia, un dopoguerra difficile proprio per i partigiani garibaldini, che più avevano lottato e sofferto per la liberazione dal nazifascismo. I ricordi di Franceschinis ci rendono un racconto di formazione all'antifascismo di un ragazzo nella Udine del ventennio fascista, la fame di libri e di conoscenza, l'insegnamento accorto e nascosto di professori che attraverso la poesia e la letteratura portavano ai giovani studenti valori non allineati con il regime, la frequentazione di ambienti di un'opposizione sotterranea spontanea ma vivace fatta di serate a discutere e a leggere con persone più grandi, professori, artisti, operai, e la decisione, dopo l'8 settembre del '43, di aderire alla Resistenza, prima in città e poi in montagna. Checo ricorda le difficoltà per un ragazzo cittadino di una vita tra i monti, le notti all'aperto, il cibo scarso, i primi contatti con le armi, la paura delle spie e il coraggio delle scelte, i lunghi tragitti a piedi per sfuggire ai rastrellamenti, in quella Carnia che vide, nell'estate del '44, la nascita della Repubblica partigiana. E descrive i suoi compagni più grandi e quelli giovani come lui. E poi i giorni della liberazione e l'entusiasmo per la vittoria sul fascismo e la cacciata dei tedeschi. E le prime difficoltà, il risveglio dal sogno, gli Alleati e la realtà del nuovo potere dei partigiani "bianchi", embrione della futura Gladio che arresta e processa i garibaldini. Lui è uno di questi, e finisce in un campo di prigionia a Rimini. È la parte più drammatica del racconto, che ci introduce nella sofferenza e nelle delusioni di chi aveva immaginato un futuro di pace e giustizia, ma che di questa generazione ci racconta la capacità di resistenza e di resilienza. Neologismo semantico, questo, forse abusato negli ultimi anni, ma più che mai adatto, in questo caso, a descrivere la forza morale che gli ideali comunisti diedero ai partigiani perseguitati per affrontare la persecuzione e ricostruirsi una vita, continuando a credere in quei valori.
