Two vintage black-and-white photographs of publisher Rob Wagner and director Frank Capra on KFWB radio in 1936. One photograph shows Wagner and Capra with KFWB executives Harry Maizlish and Bob White in the background. Both photographs with annotations in manuscript ink and pencil on the versos. KFWB first signed on the air in 1925, founded by Warner Brothers co-founder Sam Warner. In 1950, the station was sold to Maizlish, the longtime general manager, and the studios were moved off the Warner lot to join Maizlish's FM station, KFMV, on Hollywood Boulevard. Although he enjoyed a lengthy career as a director, screenwriter, and magazine writer, Rob L. Wagner is best remembered today as the editor and publisher of "Script," a left-leaning, weekly literary film magazine published in Beverly Hills between 1929 and 1949. Wagner also hosted a short-lived weekly radio broadcast on KFWB in 1936. Approximately 10 x 8 inches. One photograph Near Fine, the other photograph Very Good, with a horizontal crease affecting the bottom portion of the photograph.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. Second Printing [stated]. xii, [2], 513, [1] pages. Illustrations. Index. Foreword by John Ford. Small edge tears/chips to DJ edges. Inscribed by the author on the half-title page. The inscription reads To Syd Cassyd--Beloved subway Commando--Frank. Laid in is a transmittal/presentation TLS from Bill Feeder, sending Cassyd this copy. Feeder was with the publication BOXOFFICE of Hollywood, CA. Sydney Cassyd (December 28, 1908 February 4, 2000) was the founder of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in 1946. Frank Russell Capra (born Francisco Rosario Capra; May 18, 1897 September 3, 1991) was an Italian-American film director, producer, and screenwriter who was the creative force behind several major award-winning films of the 1930s and 1940s. Capra became one of America's most influential directors during the 1930s, winning three Academy Awards for Best Director from six nominations, along with three other Oscar wins from nine nominations in other categories. Among his leading films were It Happened One Night (1934), Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936), You Can't Take It with You (1938), and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939). During World War II, Capra served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps and produced propaganda films, such as the Why We Fight series. He retired from filmmaking in the mid-1960s. In the ensuing decades, however, It's a Wonderful Life and other Capra films were revisited favorably by critics. Capra served as President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, worked alongside the Writers Guild of America, and was head of the Directors Guild of America. Although Frank Capra (1897 1991) is best known as the director of It Happened One Night, Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, You Can't Take It with You, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Arsenic and Old Lace, and It's a Wonderful Life, he was also an award-winning documentary filmmaker as well as a behind-the-scene force in the Director's Guild, the Motion Picture Academy, and the Producer's Guild. He worked with or knew socially everyone in the movie business from Mack Sennett, Chaplin, and Keaton in the silent era through the illustrious names of the golden age. He directed Clark Gable, Jimmy Stewart, Cary Grant, Gary Cooper, Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Jean Harlow, Claudette Colbert, Bette Davis, and others. Reading his autobiography is like having Capra sitting in your living room, regaling you with his anecdotes. In The Name Above the Title he reveals the deeply personal story of how, despite winning six Academy Awards, he struggled throughout his life against the glamors, vagaries, and frustrations of Hollywood for the creative freedom to make some of the most memorable films of all time. Derived from a Kirkus review: To hear Frank tell it, he was the one who innovated the "Me Director -- Me picture!" approach. After a poverty-stricken childhood, an earnestly fought and acquired education as a chemical engineer and a total fluke as entrance to the art of "film." In fact he directed successfully the first time he laid eyes on a movie set, only later backing up to learn the rudiments. . . everything from watering DeMille-type elephants to writing "toppers" for Sennett jokes. And then he met Columbia's "Germ of the Ocean," Harry Cohn, and settled into directing. He was the first into no makeup for the actors and the foremost in the creation of "Lost Horizon." He was a commander of his elements and moved into directing documentaries for the President and the likes of Sinatra and Crosby. His life was epic and memorable and his hot-shot remembrances place him near to, if not next to, the immortals.

Original typed letter signed from screenwriter DeWitt Bodeen to Victor Scherle and William Levy, authors of ÔThe Films of Frank CapraÕ and ÔAffectionately, T. S. Eliot: The Story of a Friendship: 1947-1965.Õ on printed Motion Picture Country House and Lodge stationery. The letter reads in full: ÒDear Messrs. Levy and Scherle: Our mutual friend, Morgan Farley, gave me your address, so IÕm writing to tell you that IÕm a resident at the Country House, where we have another mutual friend in Mary Astor. She, as a matter of fact, lent me her copy of your new book on Capra, which I read with a great deal of interest. ItÕs a handsome book honoring a great talent. WeÕre not too far away, and sometime if youÕre coming over this way, give me a call, and perhaps we can then meet. IÕm in Bungalow #21, and look out on the John Ford Chapel, which makes me sometimes think IÕm no the back lot at 20th. I go into town frequently to do research at the Academy library and to see the movies, so donÕt give up if IÕm away when you call. Best wishes, and looking forward to meeting you, DeWitt Bodeen.Ó Fine condition. DeWitt Bodeen (1908 - 1988) was a screenwriter and playwright and wrote several books and articles about film and screen personalities. He is best known for his work on the classic Val Lewton films ÔCat People,Õ ÔThe Curse of the Cat People,Õ and ÔThe Seventh Victim.Õ.
