Vintage 1981 - The Shamrock Story - A History of the Shamrock Hotel - Bendigo, Australia On 5 January 1854 Jose…ph Carncross, owner of the Royal Exchange Restaurant on Bendigo Flat, sat down and wrote to the Colonial Secretary. The Bendigo Goldfield was then just two years old and the makeshift township of Sandhurst that had grown up about the main Government Camp was beginning to acquire an air of permanence. A first survey was about to be carried out and a first sale of town allotments was in the offing.
