Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -Franz Schubert's three last piano sonatas were all composed in September 1828, two months before the composer's premature death. These are the Sonatas in C minor (D. 958), B-flat major (D. 960) and A major (D. 959), the last of which is presented here in a separate edition. For this Urtext edition, the editor consulted the complete autograph in addition to an early draft.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -No other great composer left as many works for piano duet as Franz Schubert. Making music with others, often in a social circle, was a solid component of the Schubertian circle of friends. With the Fantasie in f minor D 940 op. post. 103, however, Schubert completely left the sphere of social gatherings and created, in the first months of his last year of life, a work of almost symphonic form, whose elegiac atmosphere at the beginning sets the tone for the entire work. Schubert was apparently aware of the significance of the work and prepared it for printing: the autograph already contained in his hand the opus number of the first edition published in March 1829.; Aucun autre grand compositeur n'a écrit autant d'oeuvres pour piano à quatre mains que Franz Schubert.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 160 pages. Published in 2019. Retrospective collection of essays. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only and in the United Kingdom only. There is NO American Edition. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Alfred Brendel's "The Lady From Arezzo: My Musical Life And Other Matters". His unapologetically and delightfully eccentric glance at his lifelong aesthetic passions as well as a summing-up of his career as one of the greatest pianists of our time. Alone among performing artists, Alfred Brendel was also a poet and an essayist of the first rank. That is to say, his writings have genuine literary value; they qualify as literature. The eponymous "Lady From Arezzo" refers to a beguiling and enigmatic mannequin that Alfred Brendel chanced upon in a window display in Arezzo, a small town in Italy, which he subsequently acquired. Who is this strange lady? Why is she carrying a large egg on her head? She conveys great seriousness together with quirky comic effect. In other words, she is the physical epitome of Brendel's own musical and literary essence. As such, the book begins with a brilliant, extended discussion of Dada, the most misunderstood movement of Modernism. Then, harking back to the Classical and Romantic Periods, masterpieces are re-appraised by Brendel, delving beyond performance towards their import and "affect", what they mean and the important context of their original creation and subsequent place in musical history. The "piece-de-resistance" is his summing-up essay, "My Musical Life", offering an insightful history of his stupendous career: "Music" rather than - more than - "Life", illuminated in a great essay. Alfred Brendel died on June 17, 2025 at the age of 94, his place in Western music and our larger culture preeminent and secure. An absolute "must-have" title for Alfred Brendel collectors. This copy is very prominently, beautifully, and uniquely signed, dated (shortly after publication), and inscribed in blue ink-pen on the title page by the author: "To John Alex, sharing music long distance, with all best wishes, Alfred Brendel, June 2020". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. His inscription refers mindfully to the COVID lockdown, which severely limited ("distancing") and in most cases, cancelled concerts as well as book signings outright, among other cultural events. This title is a great collection. As far as we know, this is the only such signed, post-dated, and inscribed copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing (British) available online and despite its imperfection (rubbing on black cloth boards: A publisher's flaw) is still in fine condition overall: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Alfred Brendel generously signed CD's and even Souvenir Programs. He did NOT sign too many books. Copies available online have very serious flaws ("Very Good") or are the Softcover Edition. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare, one-of-a-kind signed copy thus. One of the greatest musical and literary artists of the 20th century and our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER ALFRED BRENDEL TITLE IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 057135372X. Signed by Author.

One of the best books on the musical art and achievement of Franz Schubert of our time. Advance Signed Copy of the First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Ian Bostridge's "Schubert's Winter Journey: Anatomy of An Obsession". His exploration of the world's most famous and challenging song cycle, "Winterreise". A definitive interpreter of the work, Bostridge "teases out the themes - literary, historical, psychological - that weave through the twenty-four songs that make up this legendary masterpiece. Completed in the last months of the young Schubert's life, 'Winterreise' has come to be considered the single greatest piece of music in the history of Lieder. These twenty-four short poems set to music for voice and piano are performed uninterrupted in little more than an hour. It nonetheless has an emotional depth and power that no music of its kind has ever equalled. A young man walks out into snow and darkness. As he wanders away, he experiences a cascade of emotions: Loss, grief, anger, and loneliness, shot through with fleeting moments of hope until the landscape he inhabits becomes one of alienation and despair. Originally intended to be sung to an intimate gathering, performances now pack the greatest concert halls around the world. Drawing equally on his vast experience performing this work, on his musical knowledge, and on his training as a scholar, Bostridge explores for us the world Schubert inhabited, his biography and psychological makeup, the historical and political pressures within which he became one of the world's greatest composers, and the continuing resonances and affinities that our ears still detect today" (Publisher's blurb). An absolute "must-have" title for Franz Schubert and Ian Bostridge collectors. This Advance Signed Copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Ian Bostridge. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a contemporary classic. This is one of few such pre-signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Ian Bostridge signed copies of the book through the publisher only. He did NOT tour or promote the book in person. Copies available online have serious flaws (because the white DJ soils easily) or are in subsequent printings. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. Hand-colored etching by Herta Czoernig-Gobanz (1886-1970), estate signed. Plate size 20 x 18,5 cm (7¾ x 7¼ in), sheet size 35 x 29 cm (13¾ x 11½ in). In 1825 and 1826 the composer lived in the so-called "Fruwirthaus" next to Karlskirche church, where Johann Fruwirt's gun factory was located. The building captured in the picture by the artist had to make way for an office building in 1971. Among other works, Schubert wrote the "Deutsche Messe" ("German Mass", D 872) here, which was premiered in the Karlskirche. The musical quotation shows the beginning of "Das Wandern" ("Wandering"), the first song in the cycle "Die schöne Müllerin" (op. 25, D 795) composed in 1823 after poems by Wilhelm Müller: "Das Wandern ist des Müllers Lust, das Wandern" ("To wander is the miller's delight, to wander").

Between 1820 and 1826 the composer often visited the inn in the romantic valley of Hinterbrühl near Mödling (Lower Austria) with friends.
