Condition: Very Good. A good likeness in colors of Right Rev. James Fraser, D.D. Bishop of Manchester; lithographed from a photograph ".by Mr. Enos Eastham, of Market Street, Manchester"; with a facsimile signature below; paper 8" x 11" sheet approx. overall; James Fraser (1818-1885) bishop of Manchester, ".In addition to the usual episcopal duties Fraser threw himself into almost every social movement of the day. He was to be seen going about the streets on foot, his robe-bag in his hand; he addressed meetings several times a day; he spoke to workmen in mills and to actors in theatres; he was diligent in attending his diocesan registry.Fraser was never a professed theologian, but his views were on the whole of the old high-church school. He had little sympathy with the Tractarian high-churchmen, and in all matters of practice he was extremely liberal, and more disposed to take a legal than an ecclesiastical view of such matters. His death was universally lamented. Nonconformists of all denominations, with the Jewish and Greek congregations of Manchester, sent flowers to his funeral. Huge crowds attended a memorial service in Manchester on the day of his burial." (J. A. Hamilton, rev. H. C. G. Matthew in the DNB); this image from the series of biographical portraits in "The Modern Portrait Gallery." 1st series, by this publisher; light wear; portrait of the important British ecclesiastical figure in very good condition.

Book
Hardback. Condition: Very Good. New Edition. 1834. New, abridged edition. viii, 375pp. James Fraser (1700 - 1769) was a Scottish minister, known as a biblical critic in the Calvinist tradition. His Treatise on Sanctification was prompted by the view taken by John Locke of the fifth and sixth chapters of the Epistle to the Romans, Locke applying them solely to the Gentiles. Starting from this point, Fraser was led into an exposition and a refutation of views of Hugo Grotius, Henry Hammond, Locke, Daniel Whitby, Jeremy Taylor, John Alexander, and others. The book is bound in contemporary of possibly original very dark green cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some soiling on the boards. The corners and spine ends are bumped with some damage and a little loss to the cloth around the corner tips and at the spine ends. There is a split of about 1" in the cloth at the bottom of the front spine edge and a split of about 1/2" at the top of the rear spine edge. The rear spine edge also has two small holes in the cloth. The rear endpapers are soiled with some staining and the front free endpaper has been glue onto the front fixed endpaper. There is no inscription.
