Maroon boards and end papers with gilt engraved picture of author (presumably) with a rifle sitting on a Caribbean beach complete with palm trees and mountains in the back. The boards have rubbed spots with fraying at the corners and top and bottom spine. The front hinge is loose and has almost completely separated save the webbing of the spine. The pages are toned and foxed to varying degrees in different parts of the book. There is heavy foxing of the tissue of the frontispiece. Two rear pages includes description of newly discovered birds from the author's trip. Former owner's name of FEP in pencil. This book could be repaired for reading purposes. The author explored the islands allegedly under the auspices of the Smithsonian Institute according to the preface. This book is not an ex-library book.

Part I has The Silver City, 6 chapters, pages 1-47, and has Cacique John, 6 chapters, pages 48-93. Part II has Montezuma's Gold Mines, 12 chapters, pages 1-44. The illustrations are dark blue. The top and bottom edges of the spine strip and the boards' front corners have color loss from shelf wear rubbing. About a fifth of the back board has stains. The text block ends have darkened. The pages are tanned. The front, blank page has a 1 3/4 in. closed tear, tipped back together with glue. The Contents page has a linear 3/8 in. chip. Scans e-mailed upon request.
