Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. First US Edition. A first printing of the first American edition, published in 1952. This copy has the added interest of the following inscription on the front free endpaper: 'To Nora Littlejohn - from us at Warner Bros. hoping you will enjoy the novel and the film -…Carl Sch---- (unclear signature) 23 November 1955.' (please see scans). ***A very good copy in black paper-covered boards with silver titles to the spine. The boards show some marks commensurate with age and handling, but are generally clean with no bumps or creases to the edges, and no damage to the fragile spine - just light creasing to the top and tail of the spine. Corners sharp. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Page block edges generally clean, but with a couple of splash stains to the bottom edge (not affecting the interior pages) and with the top edge stained red by the publisher (now faded), and the fore-edge untrimmed (as many American editions are). Internally also very good, with the aforementioned interesting period inscription. Pages clean with no foxing. No creases or tears. ***In a good only original dustwrapper, which has been price-clipped at the top corner of the front flap. Whilst the dustwrapper is largely complete, there is some loss at the top and tail of the spine and corner tips, and a closed tear with a lot of associated creasing to the bottom edge of the back panel. There is also a scuff tear at the centre of the spine of the dustwrapper, and quite a lot of rubbing, small nicks and creasing to the extremities. Some rubbing, creasing and fading to the colours on the spine of the dustwrapper. The back panel, which is white, is also slightly marked. The foldover flaps are largely uncreased, but with a couple of light stains. With a portrait of the author by Philippe Halsman on the back panel. ***215mm x 145mm. 447 pages. ***'Edna Ferber (August 15, 1885 - April 16, 1968) was an American novelist, short story writer and playwright. Her novels include the Pulitzer Prize-winning So Big (1924), Show Boat (1926; made into the celebrated 1927 musical), Cimarron (1930; adapted into the 1931 film which won the Academy Award for Best Picture), Giant (1952; made into the 1956 film of the same name) and Ice Palace (1958), which also received a film adaptation in 1960. She helped adapt her short story "Old Man Minick", published in 1922, into a play (Minick) and it was thrice adapted to film, in 1925 as the silent film Welcome Home, in 1932 as The Expert, and in 1939 as No Place to Go. In 1925, she won the Pulitzer Prize for her book So Big. Ferber initially believed her draft of what would become So Big lacked a plot, glorified failure, and had a subtle theme that could easily be overlooked. When she sent the book to her usual publisher, Doubleday, she was surprised to learn that he greatly enjoyed the novel. This was reflected by the several hundreds of thousands of copies of the novel sold to the public. Her 1952 novel Giant became the basis of the 1956 movie, starring Elizabeth Taylor, James Dean and Rock Hudson. Giant was the last of Dean's three films as a leading actor, and earned him his second and final Academy Award nomination - he was killed in a car crash before the film was released. His friend Nick Adams was called in to do some voice dubbing for Dean's role.' (Wiki) ***A first printing of the first American edition, complete with the original attractive dustwrapper, albeit with the above-mentioned faults. With a particularly interesting inscription from an executive working at Warner Brothers, who released the film of "Giant" in 1956. ***Of interest to collectors of novels that went on to become Hollywood films. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Fred McCarroll (Jacket design) (illustrator).

hardcover. Condition: Sehr gut. Auflage: 1. Auflage.
