Son catalogue en fournit un descriptif particulièrement précis. Nous le reproduisons parce qu'il guide le regard sur les éléments importants du paysage urbain : « Panorama de Nantes, dessiné et gravé par Martens ; magnifique estampe gravée à la manière noire. Demi-feuille grand aigle en long. 6fr. Le Panorama de Nantes est pris du haut de la dernière maison de l'extrémité de l'Île Gloriette, dite le Bout-du-Monde. L'artiste ne pouvait pas se mettre dans une position plus favorable. Le Panorama comprend tout ce que le regard peut embrasser, depuis le quai de Richebourg jusqu'au quai de l'Hermitage. On y voit les ponts Maudit et de la Belle-Croix, derrière lesquels apparaît la Promenade du Port-Maillard et Richebourg ; l'Île Feydeau, sur le devant de laquelle la maison des Bains et la promenade de la Petite-Hollande sont d'un aspect si gracieux ; les quais Brancas et Flesselles derrière lesquels s'élèvent la vieille tour du Bouffay et la masse imposante de la Cathédrale ; la place du Commerce, le pont et la promenade de la Bourse ; le quai de la Fosse dans toute son étendue, depuis la maison dite des Tourelles? jusqu'aux Chantiers de constructions ; plus loin viennent les Salorges, le quai de l'Hermitage, et, par-dessus, tout le coteau du Moulin-des-Poules et le quartier du roi Baco. ? Ce tableau, si consciencieusement dessiné, qu'on y retrouve avec la plus grande exactitude les plus légers détails, est habilement gravé. La Loire chargée de navires et d'embarcations de toute espèce, la circulation nombreuse de voitures et de personnages, les quais couverts de marchandises, donnent à ce Panorama un air de vie et de nature qu'il était difficile de pousser plus loin. En somme ce Panorama fait honneur au crayon et au burin de M. Martens. C'est le meilleur souvenir de Nantes que puisse emporter l'étranger, le présent le plus flatteur à adresser à l'ami absent, et ce doit être aussi le principal ornement du cabinet de l'habitant de Nantes. Le Panorama de Nantes a 92 centimètres de long (34 pouces) sur 25 centimètres de large (9 pouces), sans y comprendre les marges. »Derrière les formules de la réclame, il est intéressant de constater que le Panorama de Martens semble être le point de vue idéal sur la ville.
