Complete with fold-out map. 332 p + 39 p publisher s adverts. Original green cloth binding measures 8.25 x 5.5 , 8vo. In fair condition. Boards normally scuffed at edges and worn/bumped at corners. Head of spine lacking; tail collapsed with frayed cloth. Gilt lettering overall bright and clean. Front hinge scuffed with a small chip - exposed binding. Head of rear hinge cracked with exposed binding mesh. Dampness staining on bottom edge of rear board (does not impact text-block). Fore-edge deckled. Fold-out frontispiece map overall clean & intact with a small tear close to attachment point in gutter. Normal toning in margins, some scattered age-staining. Some leaves are brittle and prone to chipping at edges. Binding intact. Please see photos and ask questions, if any, before purchasing. Friedrich von Hellwald (1842 1892) was an Austrian writer on geography and the history of civilization. He was born at Padua. He entered the Austrian Army in 1858, and was a lieutenant of cavalry (1866) in the war with Prussia. In 1866 he became an editor of the Austrian military magazine, Österreichische Militärische Zeitschrift. In 1872 he moved from Vienna to Cannstatt, where he succeeded Oscar Peschel as chief editor of Das Ausland. In this capacity, he emphasized subjects associated with anthropology and the history of civilization. In 1881 he resigned as editor of Das Ausland. Originally published as: Die Russen in Centralasien. Eine Studie über die neueste Geographie und Geschichte Centralasiens (1873). First Edition in English Language + First British Edition.
