Veale, además de un soldado inglés devenido en especialista en temática militar, fue también un abogado gran conocedor del derecho de guerra, por lo que ha podido reseñar brevemente siglos de historia militar y los comportamientos de los vencidos de acuerdo a los códigos vigentes. Consecuentemente, no ha dudado en afirmar categóricamente que la Segunda Guerra Mundial y los juicios instituidos por los vencedores constituyen un claro retroceso desde las prácticas civilizadas hacia las mas bárbaras y primitivas reacciones. En la guerra moderna se han reconocido, desde hace mucho tiempo, ciertas consideraciones con relación a los heridos y prisioneros, mientras que las hostilidades son dirigidas únicamente contra las fuerzas combatientes enemigas. De este modo se fue estableciendo, en forma gradual, un código de conducta que llegó a estar oficialmente reconocido por todos los países civilizados, hasta que los aliados decidieron llevar de nuevo a esta civilización hacia la barbarie. Ya el capitán Liddell Hart en 1948 escribió que la guerra había sido librada "por los medios de guerra más incivilizados que el mundo haya conocido desde las devastaciones mongolas" y Veale se encarga de demostrarlo clara y documentadamente. Este libro demuestra, con máximo detalle, que fueron los aliados quienes comenzaron el "bombardeo" de poblaciones civiles sin ningún fin militar. Si bien los responsables de los bombarderos ya habían expresado abierta y cínicamente la necesidad de asesinar civiles inocentes, ahora sabemos tambien que en marzo de 1942 el gobierno británico adoptó el Plan Lindemann por el cual las casas de la clase trabajadora recibieron la máxima prioridad como objetivos de ataque aéreo. Veale es meticuloso en su argumentos y cita transcripciones de Consejo de ministros, las memorias de los involucrados en la toma de decisiones, y muchas otras fuentes para demostrar que británicos y estadounidenses fueron los impulsores de tales prácticas, y que si hubiera existido realmente justicia en Nuremberg, los aliados tendrían también que haberse sentado en el banquillo de los acusados. Las reglas de juego establecidas por la farsa de los Juicios de Nuremberg significa que en cualquier guerra futura los almirantes, generales y mariscales del aire de los vencidos podrían ser condenados a muerte por obedecer órdenes de su gobierno a las que les era imposible renunciar. Además, para agrandar la pantomima, los fiscales fueron juez y jurado en sus propios casos. Finalmente, los "crímenes de guerra" ensayados de Nuremberg y Tokio, y sus numerosas y más bárbaras imitaciones en la Europa oriental controlada por los comunistas, establecieron el peligroso principio de que "el crímen de guerra más grave de todos es estar en el bando perdedor." Aquellos juicios por crímenes de guerra que en su momento fueron aprobados por la mayoría de los abogados -descontando honrosas excepciones- ahora encuentran pocos defensores: uno de los que se mantuvieron en silencio en el momento en que se estaban produciendo los describió como "un acto de imprudencia" y otro desestimó los juicios de Nuremberg como "una farsa macabra".25.
