Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. ONE AMERICAN S OPINION OF THE EUROPEAN WAR F.W. WHITRIDGE WWI 1914 HC. Here for your consideration is a small hard cover book written by a wealthy American businessman in response to German appeals to the U.S. to stay out of World War I or join them. I read it through, but you will really have to be a student of the history of those times to understand the nuance and implications of what the Author has written. Please find: One American s Opinion of the European War An Answer to Germany s Appeals by Frederick W. Whitridge. I found a brief reference about him with Wikipedia, a portion of which I paraphrase here below: Whitridge's family came to America in 1642. He graduated from Amherst College and Columbia Law School in the 1880s and lectured on political science and constitutional law at Columbia for years. He was perhaps best known for acquiring the Third Avenue Railroad and rehabilitating and upgrading it. It would eventually become part of the New York City subway system (the IRT). This small hard cover book (4 ¾ x 7 inches 79 pages) was published by E.P. Dutton and Company of New York dated 1914 and probably a First if not the only Edition. It is bound in dark blue cloth with gilt titles on the cover. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The hard covers are perhaps a bit dust-dulled but still very presentable. The gilt titles are fully legible and attractive. The spine is faded and the gilt titles there hard to see. Inside the book is unmarked and the pages are clean and bright throughout. Both hinges are intact, and the binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.

The author, an American observer, was in Europe when the war began and was privy to the political climate that led up to it. The book provides a first-hand account of the war's early days, along with a trenchant analysis of the German mindset in the lead-up to the conflict. The author argues that Germany's aggression was the result of delusions of national grandeur, exacerbated by a sense of cultural superiority. The book offers insights into the nature of imperialism and the dangers of nationalism, rendering it a valuable historical document and a sobering reminder of the destructive power of war and the importance of diplomacy.
