Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. xxviii, [2], 300, [4] pages. Notes. Introduction by Mike Wallace. Portrayals of eleven recipients of the Congressional Medal of Honor, from each branch of the military, and an examination of what drove them to go so far above and beyond the call of duty. The elev…en are: Mary Edwards Walker, Leopold Karpeles, Edouard Victor Michel Izac, Samuel Woodfill, David Shoup, Maynard Smith, Vernon Baker, Hiroshi "Hershey" Miyamura, William Charette, Dwight Johnson, and Thomas Kelley. Allen Mikaelian is the author of the New York Times bestseller Medal of Honor: Profiles of America's Military Heroes from the Civil War to the Present and is a doctoral fellow in history at American University in Washington, DC. Myron Leon Wallace (May 9, 1918 - April 7, 2012) was an American journalist, game show host, actor, and media personality. He interviewed a wide range of prominent newsmakers during his seven-decade career. He was one of the original correspondents featured on CBS news program 60 Minutes, which debuted in 1968. Wallace retired as a regular full-time correspondent in 2006, but still appeared occasionally on the series until 2008. The Congressional Medal of Honor is Americas highest military award. In this remarkable work, the first of its kind, acclaimed 60 Minutes reporter Mike Wallace looks at the lives of the recipients of the medal and explores what it is that drove them to go so far above and beyond the call of duty. Wallace examines not only their extraordinary feats in battle (plunging into heavy fire, throwing themselves on live grenades, attacking enemy regiments single-handed), but also their lives before and after. Throughout the book, and particularly in his moving introduction, he meditates on the meaning of courage and shows what we can learn from the lives of those who perform amazing acts of selflessness and bravery. The Congressional Medal of Honor, established during the Civil War, pays tribute to a person who has "distinguished himself conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty." Washington Literacy Council board member Mikaelian spotlights 11 of the 3,456 soldiers who have received this legendary honor, while 60 Minutes' Wallace supplies historical context with his introduction and brief, general commentaries on various U.S. wars. The book's lively vignettes not only describe the battles faced by the men (and one woman), but also trace the ways the Medal affected their later lives. The book profiles Hiroshi Miyamura, a Korean War marine who fought back Chinese soldiers when he and fellow troops were isolated in a mountain pass on the Chinese-Korean border; as well as Dwight Johnson, a celebrated Vietnam vet deeply conflicted about his role in the war and especially about his recruitment of fellow young black men into the armed services. The practice of Mary Edwards Walker, a Civil War doctor who is the only woman to have won the Medal, fell into controversy after the war, leading the government to revoke her Medal toward the end of her lifeâ"when she was an isolated eccentric and, literally, a sideshow curiosity. This absorbing set of accounts should appeal to military history enthusiasts and anyone interested in the heroic exploits of ordinary Americans. First Edition [Stated], First Printing [Stated]. Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. xix, [1], 321, [11] pages. Illustrations. Signed by Lynn Sherr and Kayce Jennings on the title page. Includes Introduction by Lynn Sherr. Chapters include A Canadian Childhood; Boy Anchor; The Talking Trench Cot; Roving Anchor; Flying Solo; Making the News; World… News Tonight; Enthusiasms; September 11; The Man; Citizen; "I Have Lung Cancer"; Legacy; "Finally, This Evening.". Also includes Acknowledgments by Kayce Freed Jennings; Notes; Chronology of Peter Jennings' Life; Selected Documentaries and News Specials; and Photo Credits. Peter Charles Archibald Ewart Jennings CM (July 29, 1938 - August 7, 2005) was a Canadian-American journalist who served as the sole anchor of ABC World News Tonight from 1983 until his death from lung cancer in 2005. Jennings began his professional career with CJOH-TV in Ottawa, anchoring the local newscasts. In 1965, ABC News tapped him to anchor its flagship evening news program. Critics and others in the television news business attacked his inexperience. He became a foreign correspondent in 1968, reporting from the Middle East. Jennings returned as one of World News Tonight's three anchormen in 1978, and he was promoted to sole anchorman in 1983. He was also known for his marathon coverage of breaking news stories, staying on the air for 15 hours or more to anchor the live broadcast of events such as the Gulf War in 1991, the millennium celebrations in 1999-2000, and the September 11 attacks in 2001. In addition to anchoring, he was the host of many ABC News special reports and moderated several American presidential debates. Derived from a Kirkus review: A warm tribute to the Canadian who anchored ABC's World News Tonight for 22 years. Based on interviews, this oral history gathers the voices of more than 60 colleagues, friends, family members and others who fondly recall the handsome and charming Jennings (1938-2005). The Toronto-born son of a noted radio broadcaster in Canada, Jennings joined an Ottawa TV station, where his newscasts caught the eye of the struggling ABC network. In 1965, at age 26, he became anchor of the network's nightly newscast, competing with stalwarts Walter Cronkite at CBS and Huntley and Brinkley at NBC. As recounted here, Jennings's ABC career was an education in both journalism and American culture that turned the pretty-boy neophyte into a first-rate reporter who worked hard to make complex issues understandable to viewers. Sent from his anchor post into the field, he learned his craft during 15 years as a foreign correspondent in the Middle East and elsewhere, returning as ABC's nightly anchor in 1983. Darnton (an editor), Kayce Freed Jennings (a documentary producer and Jennings's wife at the time of his death) and Sherr (an ABC News correspondent) artfully intersperse the journalist's own words with those of others, from Lauren Bacall to Rudy Giuliani, to create bright, readable vignettes of Jennings covering the Munich Olympics, presidential campaigns, 9/11 and more. Interviewees recall a sweet, down-to-earth man and a broadcaster of elegance and grace who could be a demanding perfectionist, editing and revising copy moments before going on the air and insisting on the simplest, most direct way to tell a story. Readers who watched Jennings faithfully over the years will enjoy behind-the-scenes views of this charismatic news anchor who became, in Cokie Roberts's words, "the voice of civilization" on television. Jennings not only learned to stop saying "shedule," he fell in love with America and became a citizen shortly before his death. Evocative glimpses of a sorely missed class act. Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. Format is approximately 7 inches by 10.25 inches. xvii, [1], 508, [2] pages. Illustrated endpapers. Frontispiece. Illustrations. Maps. In Memoriam. Postscript. Notes. Selected Bibliography. Interviews. Roll call. List of Maps. Index. The collective memoir of a cl…ose-knit platoon of scouts from Sicily invasion to liberation of Dachau. Joseph E. Garland (September 30, 1922 - August 30, 2011) was an American historian and journalist who wrote extensively about the city of Gloucester, Massachusetts and its fishing industry. Garland was born in Massachusetts in 1922 to a prominent Boston area family. Garland's degree at Harvard University was interrupted by service in the United States Army in 1943. Following the war, he worked as a reporter for the Minneapolis Tribune, Providence Journal, and Boston Herald, before settling on Eastern Point, in Gloucester, Massachusetts in the home of his great grandfather Joseph Garland (mayor). While living in Gloucester Garland was an involved community member, notably acting as the first president of the restoration project of the Adventure (1926 schooner). Mr. Garland wrote more than a dozen books about Gloucester and Cape Ann, beginning with the 1963 adventure classic ?Lone Voyager,?? a biography of Howard Blackburn, known as the ?Fingerless Navigator.?? With his wife Helen?s encouragement, Mr. Garland completed his most expansive book, ?Unknown Soldiers,?? in 2008. The book, decades in the making, originated with Mr. Garland?s own war diary, recovered by a fellow soldier after the future author was wounded in battle. In the early 1970s, Mr. Garland set out across the country to track down his old Army buddies, equipped with a tape recorder and a bottle of bourbon. But when he sat down to write the book, Mr. Garland found himself stricken with a colossal case of writer?s block. It would be decades before Helen, a wartime pen pal with whom he later reconnected, realized that he was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. She became convinced of it after reading Dr. Jonathan Shay?s landmark 1994 book about combat trauma, ?Achilles in Vietnam.?? Talking with Shay about his war experience enabled Mr. Garland ?to rear back and whack through?? his inability to get started on the book, he told The Boston Globe in 2008. A painstakingly detailed document of the ordeals of his Army brethren, the book is also the author?s anguished cry about the futility of war. With Unknown Soldiers, internationally acclaimed author Joseph E. Garland presents World War II through the eyes of a close-knit infantry platoon-men who braved Nazi fire to stake out the front lines of the Allied campaigns in Sicily, Italy, France, and finally Germany. The book began as Garland's wartime notebooks, and follows his journey from privileged Harvard student to "dogface" with the 45th Infantry Division on the Winter Line and then Anzio beachhead. During the 1970s, still struggling with war's aftereffects while attempting to write his memoir, Garland tracked down some 20 buddies. Most had rarely spoken of the war to anyone; they talked to Joe with grit and humor and suffering intact, and the story grew into a collective memoir. First Edition [stated] Presumed first printing since First Edition Stated. Printing line starts with 2. Peter Freed (Author Photograph) (illustrator).
