Autograph letter, on a sheet of laid paper, 230 x 185 mm; archive stamp, in excellent condition. A good letter from Louis de Freycinet to his brother Henri, touching on two themes that would be constant throughout their careers: professional advancement within the Navy and, especially for Louis, getting their printed work in front of the most influential people. He is getting his book to Emperor Alexander I of Russia, very much an example of the right people to be showing his work: his reign (1801-1825) was the great era of Russian maritime exploration, and Freycinet corresponded with several of the Russians who explored on his watch, including Krusenstern, Lisiansky and Kotzebue. The date of this letter indicates that Freycinet is referring to a presentation set of the complete text and atlas volumes of the hydrographical section of the Baudin voyage, which Louis de Freycinet had written and prepared for publication and to the cartography of which both brothers had contributed very substantially. Its publication had been completed earlier in the year; two letters from Louis to Henri written that year were described in our 2010 catalogue "Captain Louis de Freycinet" (items 33 and 34); they discussed presentation of another set of the Baudin hydrographic volumes, to the Societé des Sciences, Belles Lettres et Arts at Rochefort. Other letters of the same period in that catalogue confirm the abiding interest of the Freycinet brothers in rank and prospects within the French navy. It is interesting here to see Louis manoeuvring early access to the lists of active officers, lists that were of compelling interest to every naval officer with an interest in his own career. In other details Louis de Freycinet is referring to Henri and Clementine's newly-born daughter, to Clementine's father Captain Bérar, also a serving officer, and to his own wife who was of course Rose de Freycinet the famous circumnavigatrix. Text "Paris 11 December 1815 "I have just a moment to let you know, my dear and good friend, that both you and I have been kept on the active list of Naval Officers. I couldn't even tell whether the same is true of Captain Bérar, your father-in-law, since the lists have not yet been made public while the person who told me what I'm passing on to you, not knowing Mr. Bérar personally, would not have been aware of his name. "I'm rushing off to the Russian Ambassador who is going to take care of getting my book to His Majesty Alexander [the Russian Emperor Alexander I]; that's why I'm in such a hurry. Farewell, my friend, to you & your amiable companion, my respectful compliments to M. and Mme. Bérar. Yours truly, your good friend, L. De Freycinet "Give me news of yourself, and especially that of my sister and her dear infant. My wife embraces you". (Paris 11 Dbre. 1815. . Book First Edition
Large-4to; Contemporary half-leather binding with gilt title on spine. With engraved title, 2 leaves (Tableau General) and 65 engraved plates (32 colored and 2 double page). - Extremely scarce second edition of this important atlas-volume of the official account of the Baudin voyage to the Pacific. With 25 more plates than the first edition of the atlas published between 1807-1816. "This very scarce second edition was prepared by Freycinet after he returned from his own expedition to the Pacific between 1817 and 1820. It is not generally known that the 1824 second edition of the "Partie Historique" contains some significant changes and additions to the first edition. The maps and charts of the first edition atlas, which bore the nationalistic and ambitious name of Terre Napoléon and included imperial French names for many parts of the coast, were omitted or greatly altered for the second edition atlas. This atlas also includes twenty-five new plates, many of which are coloured. Freycinet s alterations to the second edition reflect the political reality of the times and finally recognise the just claims of the English navigators, in particular Matthew Flinders, to the discovery of the Australian coast" (Wantrup). - With two views of Sydney (one folding), plan of Sydney, a view of Timor (folded), coastal profiles, artefacts, natural history and ethnographic subjects. Lacking the three folded maps. // Ferguson, 978 and 979; Wantrup, 82. -- More photos on our website. Sprache: Französisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.

Plates and maps in atlas volume all pristine. Overall a remarkably clean uncut set. The rare account of the Baudin-Freycinet expedition, one of the most important early explorations of Australia. The expedition was sent out by the French government in 1800 with orders to complete the cartographic survey of the Australian coast. Commanded by Nicolas Baudin, the expedition left France in 1800 and sailed via Mauritius to the Australian coast in the region of Cape Leeuwin, arriving in May 1801. Peron sailed as naturalist on the expedition and Freycinet as cartographer. The vessels, Geographe and Naturaliste, sailed north from Cape Leeuwin, surveying the coast and making observations on the natural history and inhabitants, until they crossed to Timor. After three months the two ships set out for Tasmania, continued making detailed surveys, and went on to Sydney. The group then undertook a complete survey of the southern coast and an examination of the northern coast before returning to Mauritius where, near the end of 1803, Baudin died. It was a celebrated voyage which brought back to France the most important collection of natural history specimens in the history of the French Museum, as well as a wealth of geographical and other information. ^The narrative of the expedition was begun by Peron, and completed by Freycinet after Peron's death. A tacit agreement between Peron and Freycinet, both of whom disliked Baudin, kept the commander's name mostly absent from the present official account of the expedition. Flinders completed his survey of the Australian coast before Baudin, but his imprisonment by the French in Mauritius for seven years resulted in the French exploration account being published first. Consequently, the Baudin-Freycinet narrative includes the first complete and fully detailed map of the Australian continent. It is justly one of the most famous depictions of Australia ever produced, with virtually the entire southern coast labeled "Terre Napolean," indicating possible French colonial ambitions. The .Historique Atlas contains a group of beautiful color plates, mostly of natural history specimens, many of which depict what the French saw during their important visit to Tasmania. During the nineteenth century, a large part of ornithological interest was taken by the description and discovery of new species. A number of large works were produced in France as a result of scientific expeditions sent out to gather materials to be brought home and described. These works were profusely illustrated with colour plates by the finest artists. One of the most important of these is the present work. The zoological section was written by Quoy and Gaimard. It contains a good deal of ornithological material including 27 fine plates: 'it included, probably 8 10 new species of Australian birds' - Andrew Black et al, British Ornithologists' Club, 2013. 'The Uranie, with a crew of 1123 men, entered the Pacific from the West to make scientific observations on geography, magnetism, and meteorology. the expedition. visited most notably Australia, the Hawaiian Islands, Tonga, and Tierra del Fuego. The original ship wrecked off the Falkland Islands, was replaced by the Physicienne which visited Rio de Janeiro. Captain. Freycinet's wife, Rose, was smuggled on board at the advent of the voyage and made the complete journey, causing a great deal of discord among the crew. Freycinet named an island he discovered after her - Rose Island among the Samoa Island' (Hill).
