60 lithographed plates, loose in two printed installment wrappers. Uncut copy. A few plates with some very slight foxing, but the great majority of the plates are very clean. The lithographed plates are masterfully executed by the first author De Fromentel, after plate 12 they were done by Dominique Omer Querm. Ex library Vicomte Arthur Victor Thierry de Ville d?Avray (1844-1907), who was a military man, but also a geologist/paleontologist, archeologist, naturalist, painter and poet. This copy does not bear his signature, but came from his library. Rare.Alcide d'Orbigny, in full Alcide Charles Victor Marie Dessalines d'Orbigny (1802-1857) started the ?The Paléontologie Française? which was to be the most important contribution to the knowledge of the Jurassic and Cretacean fossils of western Europe, with the descriptions and illustrations of numerous new and poorly known species. D?Orbigny died in 1857 before the work was finished, but other authors continued this series until 1894. This copy was written by the French physician and paleontologists Louis Édouard Gourdan de Fromentel (1824-1901) and the French paleontologist Henry Testot-Ferry (1826-1869).
