Sewn as issued, pictorial wrappers. La Rochelle 1988. Oblong 4to. 128 pp. Richly illustrated, partly in colour. With an illustrated chronology (pp. 29-51), "Évocation sommaire des oeuvres de Pierre-Samuel-Toussaint Fromentin-Dupeux" (pp. 93-97), "Bibliographie sélective" (p. 99), a "Liste des oeuvres d'Eugène Fromentin conservées au Musée des Beaux-Arts de La Rochelle" (pp. 101-105, 27 entries), a "Liste des oeuvres et documents complémentaires" (pp.107-124, 106 entries). Eugène Fromentin was a French painter and writer, born in La Rochelle. After leaving school he studied for some years under Louis Cabat, the landscape painter. Fromentin was one of the earliest pictorial interpreters of Algeria, having been able, while quite young, to visit the land and people that suggested the subjects of most of his works. Fromentin, who maintained that "art is the expression of the invisible by means of the visible", was much influenced in style by Eugène Delacroix.
