According to the thesis, in the ancient world individuals were tightly bound by status to traditional groups, while in the modern one, in which individuals are viewed as autonomous agents, they are free to make contracts and form associations with whomever they choose. Original dark brown cloth, gilt, decorated in blind, pale yellow coated endpapers, 227 pages, 21 leaves of publisher's ads bound at the back. Just a little rubbing to some edges, a Very Good copy. A presentation copy, on the front free endpaper in ink: "A.H. Clough. / with J.A.F' kindest regards." Under this in pencil in an unknown hand, "presented by Mr. Clough / 1849". Two corrections are made by Froude in ink, on pages 95: "feebly" for "fully" and on page 157, adding "And we never shall know which is true until we know what motion is". In a back and forth in letters (see Mulhauser, The Correspondence of Arthur Hugh Clough, v.1), Feb. 26, 1849, to Thomas Arnold, "I have not yet seen the said book -- the Nemesis of Faith."; Feb. 28, 1849, Froude to Clough, "If I knew how to send you a copy I would. If you buy it, please remember that I have made an unfortunate omission in a sentence.You will find it about half way through, and supply at the tail.'and we never shall know which is true till we know what motion is'. In the second edition, also 1849, both mistakes were corrected.

This is a Mr [?] not to me. | [?] sent it to me as your | fathers [?]. I had it copied | and returned the original to him. | The description of Carlyle is | extremely curious & interesting. | I do not suppose that you can [?] | to the publication of it, but | it is for you to judge. And [?] [?] you will kindly return | the letter. | Yours faithfully | J A Froude'. A short note, the name of which is illegible. Froude discussed another gentleman, whose name is also illegible. Here, Froude mentions Thomas Carlyle, who was a close friend and correspondent of his. In the 1880s, Froude published two volume biography of Carlyle, entitled 'Thomas Carlyle: A History of His Life in London, 1834-1881'.

Finely bound without the ads in half calf and marbled boards, backstrips gilt-tooled, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt. Bindings a little scuffed but respectable, scattered foxing, bookplates depicting an angler (after Thomas Bewick) of Richard Ormond of Tynemouth in each volume. ? First edition, published a month after Carlyle's death by his literary executor, James Anthony Froude. The bookplate is after Thomas Bewick, signed "C.N[aish]," and was #187 in the Grolier Club catalogue of an exhibition of angling bookplates held June 6 to September 7, 1918.

In this undated autograph letter signed, Froude writes to "My dear Mrs. Botta," regretting that he cannot visit but "I have undertaken a piece of literary work which will require me to be much by myself. Also the Berean people want to be in constant communication with me -- and that will be impossible if I am too far off. I am like a bear tied to a stake from which he is vainly struggling to free himself. And I tied myself to it!" James Anthony Froude (1818-1894) was a prominent 19th century English historian, novelist, biographer and editor. His works included the 12 volume History of England from the Fall of Wolsey to the Defeat of the Spanish Armada and several books on the life of Thomas Carlyle. Anne Charlotte Lynch Botta (1815-1891) was an American writer and socialite who hosted a literary salon in New York entertaining such writers as Poe, Emerson, Trollope, Thackeray, etc. Froude was in the United States on a lecture tour in 1872 which may help date the above letter. A folded sheet of 8" x 10" ruled paper with manuscript on three pages. Condition: Mailing fold lines, short edge separations reinforced with archival tissue/tape, mounting remnants on blank last page. Generally good condition. Signed by Author(s).

Thomas Carlyle's close friend and literary executor belonged to the Oxford Movement and wrote controversial novels, but is mainly remembered for his 12-volume "History of England from the Fall of Wolsey to the Defeat of the Spanish Armada" and other histories. Closing portion of ALS, 4½" X 2¼", n.p., n.d. Near fine. Bold "Believe me / faithfully yours / JA Froude." Verso (on black-bordered mourning stationery) shows mounting traces and bears a dozen words in Froude's hand. Accompanied by a fine, scarce carte-de-visite portrait by Sarony of New York, 2½" X 4¼", a pristine and handsome example.
