Colour map, colour inset maps, 110 x 78cm, original decorative colour wrapper. Repaired tears at folds, very good copy in the original decorative envelope. A world map on Mercator?s projection with Japan placed at the centre, issued as a New Year supplement to the popular monthly magazine Kingu. Five inset maps run along the lower edge, showing Western Europe, Manchuria, the hemispheres, and North America. Japanese territories are highlighted in red.Published in 1932, a year of considerable significance for Japan and the wider world, the map reflects contemporary geopolitical developments. The establishment of Manchukuo in March of that year and military conflict in Shanghai heightened public interest in international affairs. A map such as this would have served both as a practical reference and as a means of visualising Japan?s position within a rapidly changing global context.
