Add to basket4to. Fine in quarter straight grained morocco for Andrew Carnegie at Skibo Castle, with his bookplate. Andrew Carnegie [1835 - 1919] was a Scottish born industrialist and philanthropist, who, among other things, funded the building of over 2,000 libraries worldwide. In 1898 he purchased Skibo Castle in the Scottish Highlands spending £2 million on restoration. It remained with the Carnegie family until 1982 when it was sold, presumably the extensive library was dispersed at this time. We can offer a collection of the Maitland Club publications, specially bound for Carnegie in dark red straight grained morocco and all in fine condition, bearing his bookplate. The Maitland Club was private historical and literary club modelled on the Roxburghe and Bannatyne Clubs with publications usually limited to members. The typical print run was between 70 and 100 copies, with a some early titles issued in as few as 50 copies. Maitland Club, 74 (1858) £350.
